Dorothy had thought Everett's silence was due to him struggling to bounce back to normal.
But when he took her hand and they left the hospital, heading straight for their Bay Residence, Dorothy was the one left stunned. After rummaging around at home for a bit, Everett produced their marriage certificate and a manila envelope.
Now, it was Dorothy's turn to be confused.
"Are we... registering our marriage today?"
"Yeah." Everett's face was serious and solemn, a stark contrast to Dorothy's smile. He looked as if he was about to enter a negotiation, "Our child should definitely be born in wedlock."
Dorothy, who had been ready from the get-go, had no objections.
"Then let's not wait any longer. Today it is! Let's go."
She linked her arm with Everett's, pulling him towards the door, but he didn't budge.
"Huh?"
"Wait, there's something else." After saying that, he opened the manila envelope and handed Dorothy a thick stack of documents. "Here's information on my properties, shares in the Lopez Corporation, and my personal savings details."
"Why are you giving me all this?"
Everett didn't directly answer her question but instead pulled out the last document in the stack.
It was a property transfer agreement.
Dorothy was stunned upon seeing the title in bold black letters, "Everett?"
"I thought about it and realized the usual gestures might not mean much to you. So, I had these documents prepared and drafted this agreement," he said each word with utmost seriousness, "If you sign it, and if I ever make you unhappy or hurt you, you can take this and leave me with nothing. I'm willing to risk that."
"Everett..."
"We're not kids anymore. We're way past the stage where a simple 'I love you' or a bouquet of flowers can define our love! I've thought about it, and I want to use everything I own to show you how much I love you."
After speaking, Everett looked up to find Dorothy's eyes brimming with tears.
She pulled her hand away and started wiping her cheeks.
"I believe you! You don't need all this to prove your love; I already believe you'll keep your promises!" Dorothy looked into his eyes, a tear rolling down her cheek, "Even if one day, we can't make it work, it would definitely be my fault, for making you sad. It could never be your fault, Everett!"
