“Silent now, aren't you? Thought you were quite the chatterbox before!”
Felicity, feeling like she had finally caught him out, couldn't hide her smugness.
“I’m quiet because I realized... how come you remember everything so clearly?” He finally sensed something was off.
Even he, directly involved, had no recollection whatsoever.
Years had passed since those school days, they had both ventured into the world, and yet, she remembered everything, down to the very last detail!
“So what if I have a good memory?”
“What was the essay question in your SATs then?”
“I—”
Miles scanned her from head to toe before cautiously saying, “You like me, don’t you? You’ve liked me since we were kids.”
After all, the only time they shared on campus was when she was in sixth grade, and he was a senior!
Seeing a flicker of stiffness cross her face, Miles squinted, “Felicity, were you already thinking about boys and girls back then? How old were you...”
He, a senior, hadn’t even thought about it yet!
“I did not!” Felicity pushed against the door forcefully, “Open the door, I want to get out! It’s suffocating in here!”
“I’ll turn on the AC.”
“I want to get out! Are you not listening?!”
Miles grabbed her wrist firmly, raising an eyebrow, “What tone are you using with me? I’m practically your brother.”
“…”
Right.
He forgot he wasn’t Calvin.
Silence fell in the car again.
Neither spoke.
After a while, Miles sighed deeply, “It’s getting dark. I should take you home before Aunt Karen starts worrying.”
“Oh.”
“You’re not allowed to bring him.”
She frowned at him, “Why not?”
“No reason. You’re just not allowed.”
Miles hadn’t yet figured out how to explain himself, feeling unexpectedly flustered.
Agreeing to Esther had been hasty, and he didn’t want to make another decision without thinking it through. Breaking up with Esther was manageable, but Felicity was a different story.
What if one day they had to discuss breaking up? His parents would probably disown him!
She was only twenty-three, a bit naive, which was fine.
But he couldn’t afford to be. Almost thirty, and still unclear about marriage? That would be unacceptable.
“Just because you say so, doesn’t make it so,” Felicity, with all her spirited defiance, retorted. “You could bring Esther home to meet Ms. Sanchez and Mr. Lopez, so why can’t I bring Calvin?”
“You!”
“Everyone has the right to choose. Even if I once liked you, we have nothing between us now, not as a couple. Who I bring home or accept advances from is none of your business,” she snorted. “Stop saying you’re like a brother to me. Even if you were my father, you couldn’t control me!”
