In the distribution center, the excitement was palpable with the news that Craig would be stopping by today.
Magnolia, the boss's daughter, made a special trip over, concocting a plan for a "chance" encounter, all in the hopes of getting some alone time with him.
As she chatted with her father inside the office, several trucks rolled in, but none carried the face she yearned to see. Just as she was about to check with her dad about Craig's schedule, his truck, marked with the lucky number 707, finally made its grand entrance into the yard.
She had initially planned to play it cool, to make their meeting seem accidental and to maintain a certain decorum.
However, the moment Craig stepped out of his truck, it was as if her feet had a mind of their own, briskly carrying her towards him.
“Craig!” she called out.
Craig glanced her way at the sound of her voice, acknowledging her with a nod before he continued on, aiming to leave the parking lot straight away.
"Craig, wait up!" Magnolia hurried after him.
Given her status as the boss's daughter, and considering Walter had always prioritized him for jobs with prompt payments, Craig felt compelled to stop, “What's up?”
“Aren't you unloading today?” she asked, a hint of confusion in her voice.
“Not today. I passed it on to the others.”
Unloading under the scorching midday sun would surely tan him several shades darker. With a meeting with his future in-laws on the horizon, Craig figured he should probably care a bit about his appearance, hence skipping this round of work.
Magnolia's face lit up with a smile, her eyes betraying her fondness for him, “I was wondering why you were in such a hurry to leave. Listen, Craig, if you’re free today, would you come with me to a class reunion? Just pretend to be my boyfriend for the event. I’ll pay you by the hour, the same rate as your unloading gigs!”
She was sure he'd jump at the offer. After all, pretending for a few hours was far easier than manual labor.
Seeing Aurora’s face only solidified Magnolia's earlier statement in her mind.
Rich and beautiful women are always too proud. How could one possibly want to marry a truck driver?
“Exactly! If Craig agrees, I’d go get the marriage license with him right now. Can you say the same?”
She was certain Aurora's parents would never approve.
Even her own father, the owner of the distribution center, hesitated when she confessed her feelings for Craig, acknowledging his good character but lamenting his lack of wealth.
Aurora couldn't help but laugh at the challenge, turning to Craig, “She wants to go get a marriage license with you. What do you say?”
