Everett looked Jeffrey in the eye, his voice heavy. "Could it be that the baby is really Dorothy's?"
After their divorce, she was pregnant, then secretly gave birth to the child without letting him know.
Jeffrey waved his hand dismissively, his tone as certain as if he was swearing an oath.
"Absolutely not! Look, I'll tell you! When you two were going through the divorce, I coincidentally bumped into Dorothy at the hospital. She was there for a check-up."
Everett was entirely unaware of this. His thick brows furrowed. "Why didn’t you tell me?"
"Why would I tell you that? She was all determined to get a divorce! Back then, she went to the hospital because she had trouble getting pregnant. I even suspected that was why she insisted on divorcing you. But it turned out it wasn’t."
The real reason was because of Heather and Everett’s parents’ meddling.
But Jeffrey wouldn’t tell Everett that, even though he didn’t agree with Heather's actions. If he did, it would undoubtedly cause trouble.
How would Everett face his parents then?
There would also be no benefit for Everett and Dorothy to get back together. After all, what happened had happened. There was no turning back, and Everett’s mother, Amanda, could actually be pissed!
Jeffrey didn't want to see that outcome.
"She had trouble getting pregnant?"
"Yes!" Jeffrey nodded. "I heard the doctor telling her to discuss it with her husband!"
"The doctor's 'discussion', are you sure it was about her infertility, and not pregnancy?"
Jeffrey was taken aback.
Right!
"Everett, can you calm down?" Jeffrey grabbed his shirt. "Yes, I didn't hear the doctor mention her infertility. But that doesn't mean she was pregnant and gave birth to the boy! I can help you investigate this. You should go find the boy first."
"Don't stop me. I need to know the truth." Everett shook him off, his tone grim to the core. "No matter the result, I will face it."
He knew Jeffrey was trying to stop him mainly because he wasn't prepared if this turned out to be true.
But what Jeffrey didn't know was that Everett would do anything for Dorothy.
Watching Everett's determined departure, Jeffrey felt a headache coming on.
The problem between them was not just about a child, but Dorothy's deep-seated resentment for her mother.
And Everett was clueless about all of that.
If the child really was Dorothy's, then things would get even worse!

Why didn't Jeffrey call Everett from the office? Lock his door instruct security to not let anyone in and speak to Everett on the phone? Or send him a text giving him a quick summary of what's up and that he's on his way over. That way when he runs into Heather on his way out he informs her Everett already knows....
