Charles had a doctor check Noelle to confirm that all the poison was out of her system. Only then did he relax.
Rowena and Teresa came to visit Noelle the next afternoon. They were not worried because they knew Charles was there, so Noelle's safety was in good hands. They had tried to see Noelle earlier, but Charles insisted she needed her rest, which was a polite way of saying he did not want them to disturb her.
Noelle eventually heard about their concern and reassured Rowena and Teresa that she was fine.
"Wow, Charles was so worried about you!" Rowena exclaimed. "You should have seen him last night, he was so calm."
Rowena's eyes sparkled as she exclaimed. "You're so lucky to have such an amazing husband, Noelle!" She sounded so envious.
Noelle and Teresa just smiled at each other. They were used to Rowena's dramatics. They watched her go on and on while Teresa opened a thermos. "I brought you some soup," Teresa said gently. "I know you're not really hungry, but you've got to eat to get stronger."
"Yeah, Noelle," Rowena chimed in, nodding quickly. "Teresa spent all morning making this soup, and she wouldn't even let me taste it!" Rowena looked at Noelle with puppy-dog eyes. Noelle grinned and offered the bowl to Rowena. "Want some?"
"No thanks," Rowena said, pushing Noelle's hand away. She glanced around the fancy hospital room and whistled in awe. "This is one fancy room! Your husband sure knows how to treat you well." Then she remembered something. "Hey, where is he, by the way?"
Noelle's face softened. "I told him to go home. He was up all night with me and had to work all morning." She sighed, feeling a bit sorry and guilty. "If only I had been more careful yesterday, then none of this would have happened."
