When Manda saw Cordelia, she paused for a moment, then shot Cordelia a side-eye.
Cordelia noticed but had no idea why she was getting the cold shoulder.
"Manda, are you working in the Audit Department now?" Cordelia asked.
Since deciding not to join the Audit Department, Cordelia had stopped caring about it. She was worried that the more she thought about it, the more she would yearn for it.
"How could I possibly get into your company’s Audit Department? Thanks to you, I can't even if I wanted to!" Manda replied with a sarcastic tone.
"So, you didn't get in?" Cordelia asked her again, not understanding why Manda couldn’t just give a straight answer.
Manda didn't answer; instead, she just glanced at Cordelia and walked away.
Cordelia then overheard a conversation in the office, "Mr. Colby, I'm here to get my transcript. I checked I scored 76, that's pretty high, right?"
"Pretty good." Jamie handed over the transcript to Manda.
"Mr. Colby, is there anyone in our class who scored higher than me?" Manda asked again.
"Cordelia did, she scored 84."
Manda didn't say anything.
Cordelia didn't catch the rest of the conversation and left. After getting into Ronan's car, she asked Ronan, "So Manda didn't get into the Audit Department?"
"Do I have to keep tabs on every employee?" Ronan retorted.
Cordelia didn't continue, realizing that Ronan probably didn't care much about these things.
"Where did you get your transcript?" Ronan asked again.
Cordelia's face turned red immediately. She and Jamie had nothing going on, but every time Ronan asked, it felt as though she had a one-night stand with Jamie. So she vaguely replied, "Just from one of the administration staff."
Ronan didn't say anything, but he was thinking, "Who are you trying to fool? I clearly saw Adrian's car."
…
The next day when Cordelia showed up to work in her new outfit, the office chatter started,
"She's changed."
"Look at who she married, Mr. Evans."
"I bet that outfit was bought by Mr. Evans, look at the material. Definitely not cheap, probably several thousands of dollars."
"Keep your voices down. Office gossip can cost you."
