The following day, Ronan was off to work. Cordelia packed her belongings and left. She had booked her flight the previous night. Before the plane even took off, she received a text message from the bank. Ronan had transferred a small fortune into her account in several installments.
In addition, Ronan's assistant had sent her a message, providing her with the location of two luxurious suites in Millstone, along with photos of the property deeds and transfer documents.
This account, who had not spoken to Cordelia for a long time was called "Mr. Evens" in Cordelia’s phone. Cordelia was initially confused. Why would Mr. Evens send her information about properties?
He then explained, [I am Mr. Evans' assistant. This is my personal account. If you need anything, you can contact me on this number.]
Cordelia gave a bitter laugh. How long had Ronan been deceiving her? From the very beginning, he had not trusted her and had been planning against her.
Cordelia turned off her phone as the plane took off.
Jamie was waiting for her at the airport. Once in the car, he asked Cordelia, "Tired from all the traveling?"
"Living like a vampire is indeed tiring." Cordelia glanced out the window, her heart heavy with sadness. "It's all over now."
"Did you... divorce him?" Jamie asked.
"I did," Cordelia replied, feeling a sudden urge to throw up, but she held it back. However, the feeling of nausea intensified.
"Did you eat something bad?" Jamie asked Cordelia.
"I don't think so," Cordelia replied. She thought hard about what she had eaten on the plane but couldn't figure out what might have caused her sickness.
"Let's go to the hospital and have it checked out," Jamie suggested. "I have a private physician who can examine you."
Cordelia nodded.
...
At Jamie's residence, the doctor examined Cordelia and the preliminary diagnosis was, Cordelia was pregnant. Cordelia was stunned, and Jamie even more surprised. "Doctor, are you sure?" Cordelia asked, her eyes wide with surprise.
She knew exactly who the father was - there had only been one man in her life. She guessed it must have happened on the night before her exams, even though she had made sure that Ronan used a condom. Could it have slipped off because they took too long?
The doctor shrugged. "If you're not sure, you can go to the hospital for a check-up. Also, you need to get prenatal care."
After the doctor left, Cordelia was in shock. She was divorced, and now pregnant.
Of course, Ronan wouldn't think the child was his because that night, he thought Cordelia was already pregnant. However, she still had to pursue her master's degree. She couldn't let a child hold her back. If she was pregnant, she wouldn't be able to continue her studies.
Cordelia raised her hand and began to hit her own stomach.
"What are you doing, Cordelia?" Jamie stopped her.
"But, Mr. Evans..." Thomas clearly disagreed. If Jamie returned home, he would inevitably live in Ronan's shadow for the rest of his life. Jamie had finally established himself abroad and was about to open his own firm. Why would they ruin his progress now?
"Do you disagree?" Ronan stared at Thomas.
Thomas had always felt guilty towards the Evans family. Years ago, he had told Shayla about her husband's infidelity and how her husband had bought many expensive things for his mistress - things that Shayla herself couldn't afford. Over time, Shayla naturally grew resentful. During that period, Thomas would often show Shayla violent movies where betrayed wives would kill and dismember their husbands. Over time, Shayla began to identify with these characters and developed a pathological obsession with killing her husband.
The day after her husband didn't come home and a sex tape of him with his mistress was mailed to their house, Shayla snapped. She wanted to rip out her husband's treacherous heart for everyone in the neighborhood to see. The tape, however, wasn't sent by the mistress, but by Thomas.
Now that Thomas was old and the incident with Shelley had occurred, he felt even more guilty. In front of Ronan, he could not hold his head high.
"If you don't concur, then the Colby family's business, PrimeNumbers Accounting..."
"I agree!" Thomas blurted out.
He was aware that Ronan's wife had also ventured off to California.
Although Ronan had held something over Thomas before, he never really did anything to harm the Colby family. The two families had always maintained their boundaries. But ever since Ronan married Cordelia, she and Jamie had become quite close, and the Colby family's business was always teetering on the brink of collapse.
He knew, with Ronan's current resources and cunningness, sending the Colby family into bankruptcy was just a matter of time.
Out of desperation, Thomas dialed Jamie!
