"Where's Cordelia? Isn't it her grandma's funeral?" Edwin asked Brooklyn.
"Cordelia couldn't make it, Mr. Evans wouldn't let her go, but she suspects her grandmother's death was no accident, and she wants us to check it out," Brooklyn filled Edwin in.
Edwin nodded repeatedly. "Then how about this, I'll go upstairs, you can wait down here, and I'll see what I can find out," Edwin suggested.
"Sounds good. Cordelia sure is lucky to have a friend like you. Her husband sticks his nose in everything and micromanages her every move. As her friends, we have to help share the burden," Brooklyn said with a knowing look.
Edwin looked downcast. "I know, right? Mr. Evans is just looking out for her. If it were me, considering her condition, I wouldn't let her go either."
Brooklyn didn't respond, but she was thinking, “When Edwin gave that example, shouldn't he have said if it were him and her was the one in Cordelia’s condition, he wouldn't let Brooklyn go? Why did he still say Cordelia?”
It showed that in his heart, every time he thought of Cordelia's husband, he was picturing himself. Even though Edwin never showed it, it was hard to hide feelings for someone. His feelings always managed to slip through the cracks. Brooklyn felt her heart sink.
She had always known that Edwin had a secret crush on Cordelia, but today, her heart froze over.
"Cordelia sent me a thousand dollars, so I'll transfer it to you. You can decide on how to handle it," Brooklyn said, transferring the money to Edwin.
They arrived at Roseville, Ronald's neighborhood.
Edwin parked the car downstairs, and Brooklyn stayed in the car while Edwin went up alone. Only Ronald was in the living room.
"Who are you...?" Ronald asked Edwin.
"Oh, I'm the son of a friend of your grandmother's. I heard about her passing, and I wanted to pay my respects," Edwin said. "This is just a small token."
After saying this, Edwin handed over an envelope of cash to Ronald.
Ronald felt the thickness of the envelope, and his impression of Edwin improved. He didn't question Edwin's background any further. A scammer wouldn't be handing out that amount of cash.
"The funeral was held this morning. You can put a flower here." Ronald suggested.
