The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 491

Ronan swiftly carried the child down the stairs. If Petra had to done it alone, she wouldn't have managed it. Watching Ronan effortlessly place the child in his car, Petra's imagination took flight. She was transported back to her youth when the mature and steady Ronan had been by her side. His mere physical presence was enough to give her a sense of security. And now, he was holding her child.

Their paths were beginning to intersect again, more so than in the past.

Ronan instructed Petra to sit in the back seat and take care of the child. He started the car and dialed the head of Birchwood Children's Hospital to inform him of a sick child, who needed admission. The head of the hospital was more than accommodating.

Petra thought to herself, “This man truly is capable of anything. He is organized and well-connected.” Any woman would admire such a man, and Petra was no exception. Though Petra was in her thirties, she felt giddy and flushed at that moment, and a grin tugged at her lips.

"Cordelia didn't come?" Petra asked Ronan after he hung up the phone.

"Oh, she's at home working on her thesis."

Petra nodded. "Cordelia is quite formidable. She'll probably be a professor after publishing a few more papers. At this point, she can't afford to be distracted. She also has her projects, so her future is limitless."

For some reason, Ronan felt both proud and irritated at Petra's words. He was proud that his woman was impressive but irritated because all these achievements were the result of her leaving for three years.

"Do you need to borrow money?" Ronan asked Petra.

It was a bit of a drive from Birchwood College to the hospital, and the child had fallen asleep due to a fever. Petra gently patted him while the two adults found a topic to chat about.

Hearing Ronan's question brought Petra back to reality, "Um, I didn't know how to bring it up, which is why I asked Cordelia to do it. The house is a faculty benefit from the school. It’s not expensive, but it requires a full payment. It’s a bit difficult for me to handle alone."
