The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 78

In Jamie's office.

Ronan didn't say much and just quietly dropped a stack of documents.

Jamie was surprised. He picked up the documents and saw that they were detailed records showing how Thomas, his father, had conspired with several other companies to frame Ronan's father many years ago.

The more Jamie read, the more shocked he became.

"When do you think I'll submit these documents to the prosecutor's office?" Ronan asked while sitting across from Jamie.

Jamie turned pale. According to the documents, his father could be sentenced to at least twenty years in prison.

"Was it the moment Cordelia started working at my firm?" Jamie asked.

Everyone in Millstone knew that Ronan had set up the Audit Department, and Jamie had always suspected that Ronan knew about Cordelia's career move. His visit to Jamie's office today only confirmed Jamie's suspicions.

"Smart. You should know what to do; I don't need to say it." Ronan squinted at Jamie.

Jamie was fond of Cordelia, but between the twenty-year prison sentence his father might face and Cordelia, he would rather temporarily give up on her.

"But aren't you and Cordelia in a marriage of convenience?" Jamie asked. Adrian had told him this, and he believed it.

"A marriage of convenience?" Ronan lit a cigarette with a calm expression. "Do you think I'd agree to a marriage of convenience? If it were a marriage of convenience, I wouldn't care about her at all."

Jamie thought Ronan had a point.

"I understand." Jamie felt down.

Regardless of whether it was a marriage of convenience or not, they were already legally married.

Now that Jamie was obedient, Ronan stood up to leave.

As he got to the door, he stopped, turned around, and warned him. "Stop hitting on my wife!"

Jamie was speechless for a long time. Since the two were now legally married, his behavior was indeed considered "hitting on" Cordelia.

...

In the afternoon, Cordelia had a tough time.

Just as she returned from the café, she received an email from the HR department. "Thank you for submitting your resume, but there is a significant gap between your qualifications and our expectations. We hope you continue to strive."

"Significant gap."

Cordelia was instantly devastated.

It seemed that even the resume Ronan helped revise was of no use. These emails were personally reviewed by Wyatt, so Ronan had no say in the matter.

Then she received a text from Jamie. “Cordelia, thank you for your trust in our firm and for submitting your resume, but Brenda said that you declined. Since that's the case, we won't force you. Brenda will be looking for a new assistant.”

Ronan couldn't help but laugh. "Why would you say that?"

"Today the HR department replied, saying my qualifications and their requirements are vastly different. I..." Cordelia lowered her head. "Even with your recommendation, it's no use. Did I embarrass you?"

"Hmm." Ronan responded succinctly, neither saying "embarrassed" nor "not embarrassed."

However, it was clear that Cordelia didn't want to hear his response; she just wanted to vent her feelings.

"I've always done well in school; I’ve always been able to study in the best private schools, but in my sophomore year of high school, something happened at home. My dad passed away and my mom was hospitalized, so I had to take care of her while going to school. So because of my family situation, I didn't apply for grad school; I gave my school's direct admission quota to someone else. I've always felt like it's not my fault, but today..." Cordelia twiddled her hands as she spoke, "Today, the HR department sent me an email, saying that there is a significant gap between my qualifications and their requirements… A significant gap..."

Ronan glanced at her just as a tear slid down Cordelia's face and landed on her lap, followed by another. Her tears continuously flowed out.

Ronan suddenly felt that he might have gone a bit too far.

"Is that all?" He asked.

"Also..." Cordelia's eyes flickered. She didn't want Ronan to know that she also applied to PrimeNumbers Accounting; after all, she had already been rejected. She thought it was better to have less trouble, so she didn't want to bring it up. "It's not just that; there's another thing, but I don't care much about it. Only the rejection from Lumos Enterprises' HR department really upset me."

"You don't care?" Ronan caught her words.

"Yes." Cordelia continued. "Do you think I embarrassed you?"

"What's done is done. What can ya do?" Ronan responded nonchalantly.
