"Mrs. Lloyd..." Kylie's voice trembled. "Owen... was hit by a truck."
Felicia gasped. "What did you just say? How is he?"
Owen had been perfectly fine when he first returned to the country. How could something like this have happened in just a few days?
Tears streamed down Kylie's face as she held the phone. "His condition isn't good. The doctor said... he might never wake up. He might end up in a vegetative state."
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the receiver—something had shattered.
Felicia had collapsed and knocked over the bedside lamp, which smashed onto the floor.
"Mrs. Lloyd?" Kylie's heart clenched.
It took a long moment before Felicia came back to her senses. Her face was pale as she muttered, "You're joking, right? This has to be a lie. He was fine when he got back. How could he suddenly be vegetative?"
She refused to accept reality, convincing herself that she had misheard. "No... This can't be real. I must be dreaming. It's just a nightmare... And dreams are always the opposite of reality.
"Yes, that's it. Owen is fine. He has to be fine... He has to be..." Felicia mumbled, desperately trying to numb herself with denial.
"Mrs. Lloyd..." Kylie broke down and cried even harder.
"No! I don't want to hear this! I don't believe it! My son was perfectly fine! There's no way he got into an accident, let alone became a vegetable!" Felicia hysterically screamed into the phone.
"Mrs. Lloyd, I know this is impossible to accept, but Owen needs you right now. Please try to stay calm," Kylie pleaded.
Though she was barely holding it together herself, she had no choice but to comfort Felicia. "The worst-case scenario is that he remains in a vegetative state. But there have been many cases of patients waking up. We have to stay hopeful."
A mother's strength was immeasurable. Slowly, Felicia forced herself to regain composure. "What hospital are you at?" she asked in a steadier voice.
Kylie glanced at Sebastian.
