Chapter 106
After her self–deprecating remark, Queenie turned to Madison and said, “Don’t believe her nonsense. My brothers were just speaking out of anger. While I’m no saint, I’m also not a fool. With the Locke family’s standing in Riverview, do you think I’d risk offending them over a moment of frustration?
“The Andersons have no intention of using Rebecca’s horoscope for the ghost shrine. Besides, I already know her details are there, so why would I need to go through the trouble? Don’t listen to what Rebecca says.”
Queenie was both angry and anxious. She was worried that Madison would believe Rebecca and agree to something foolish, or perhaps Madison might think the Andersons were truly up to no good.
Madison replied, “I don’t believe her. I could tell from the start that you guys had the negative energy of the ghost shrine.”
“What?” Rebecca exclaimed, rushing in front of Madison. “You knew all along and didn’t tell me? Maddie, just because we’re not biological sisters doesn’t mean you can treat me this way! I really see you as a sister!” she cried.
Tanya frowned in disapproval. “Maddie, since you noticed something was off, why didn’t you say anything?”
Madison retorted, “If I said Rebecca only attained her happy relationship because of the ghost shrine, would you have believed me?” Tanya fell silent.
Rebecca hesitated for a moment before responding, “Regardless of whether or not I would’ve believed it, you still should have told me. We’re sisters, after all How could you-”
“Enough with your nonsense!” Queenie interrupted angrily. “So what you’re saying is that even if someone knows they’ll be criticized, they should still humiliate themselves by saying it?”
Then, she added, “Rebecca, how did I never realize just how shameless you were? Madison is the true heiress of the Locke family, so why would she allow you, a take one, to insult her?”
Tanya’s face fell as she immediately protected Rebecca. “Queenie, you used to be good friends with Becky. Even if you’ve fallen out, you shouldn’t say such hurtful things.”
Queenie rolled her eyes dramatically. “Are my words really that hurtful? Mrs. Locke, take a good look–this is your actual daughter.” She pointed at Madison and then at Rebecca. “You’re reprimanding your own daughter for Rebecca’s sake. Are you seriously going to blame Madison for not speaking up just to avoid trouble? Do you honestly believe Madison is here just to be criticized by you?” Tanya’s expression turned sour as she was being lectured by someone younger. She bit her lip and looked hopefully at Madison, wishing she would intervene and stop Queenie,
However, Madison had already turned around and gone into the kitchen to wash the dishes and clean up.
This sight only fueled Queenie’s frustration further. “Mrs. Locke, just look at your daughter! After being gone for over 20 years, she finally returns home, but instead of a warm welcome, she’s put to work in the kitchen!”
Scoffing, she continued, “Has Rebecca ever washed a dish or made breakfast in her life? How can you own daughter handle the kitchen so effortlessly?
