Caroline had seen Begonia lying by her bedside with a smile like she used to.
"You're back, Carrie!" she had exclaimed.
As Caroline narrated her past, she looked at Begonia with a complicated expression on her face. That was also when she finally realized that little Begonia was no ordinary child but a begonia flower demon.
Begonia propped her chin up with both hands, asking in puzzlement, "Why aren't you in good health? Why are you dying?"
Caroline touched the pigtails on Begonia's head as she replied, "Because I'm human."
Begonia didn't understand. From her point of view, she was the same age as Caroline. She didn't understand the concept of sickness or death by sickness and old age.
She was an existence cultivated from a begonia tree and had been staying in this courtyard since she was born. Her name was Begonia, and Caroline's surname was also Begonia. Caroline was the only one who could see her and play with her. They were friends who had made a promise to play together forever.
However, when Caroline returned, she was no longer fond of playing and preferred to lie on her rocking chair all day. She only wanted to admire the flowers, but although the flowers were beautiful, it was boring to lie down looking at the flowers all the time.
Begonia wanted Caroline to go out and play as they used to, but Caroline told her that she couldn't.
After hearing what Caroline had to say, the defensive look on Joshua's face faded away.
"Will she really not harm my grandmother, Ms. Locke?" he asked Madison.
Madison replied, "Her demonic energy is pure, meaning she hasn't harmed anyone before. However…"
She trailed off, looking at Begonia. "You're just a minor demon. Do you know the consequences of a minor demon forcibly bending the rules of nature and using their demonic energy to make flowers bloom?"
Caroline, who had been smiling kindly, slowly sat up and stared at the phone screen upon hearing this.
"What is this young lady saying, Josh?" she asked. "What was that about consequences?"
Begonia replied nonchalantly, "I'm not scared!"
In contrast to her attitude, Caroline was very anxious.
"What consequences are there exactly, young lady?" she asked urgently.
"She's just a minor demon who hasn't existed for very long, and she doesn't know how to go through cultivation, so her demonic energy hasn't increased since she came into existence. Forcibly consuming her demonic energy to make the flowers bloom will only cause her core to dissipate."
