There came a married couple. Meredith watched them walk in, both of them smiling. But their smiles seemed somewhat sinister to her.
"Uncle, aunt." Derek was surprised for a moment and he walked towards them politely.
Meredith frowned. She had been in the Xaviers for some time and had never seen these people before.
They came back at this moment, and it didn't seem like anything good was going to happen.
"Derek, you're finally awake." Hans patted Derek on the shoulder.
Derek looked at the man in front of him and quietly avoided his hand.
Hans was only Derek's second uncle in name. He was not the brother of Derek's father, but the son of Old Master's brother.
Back then, the property of the Xaviers was divided in an unsatisfactory way. Mr. Xavier left home alone with a sum of money and established the Xavier Group from scratch, while his good-for-nothing brothers squandered the fortune left in the Xaviers.
As a result, these people had come here again, attempting to take a share of the Xavier Group.
Originally, Mr. Xavier would have given all the Xavier Group's existing assets to Derek and wouldn't have shared them with outsiders. But because of Derek's accident, Old Master was physically and mentally exhausted, and he was not in the mood to manage the overseas business of the Xavier Group, which gave Hans the opportunity to take advantage of it.
Derek wanted to find an opportunity to take back those overseas businesses, but he didn't expect these people to take the initiative to come here.
"Derek, why don't you contact me and your Second Aunt when you wake up? Although we are dealing with our family's business abroad, we can't miss your waking up, which is a big deal. Is it because you are guarding against us?"
Hans was smiling with evil intent. In a few words, he labeled Derek as a person who was disrespectful to his elders.
"How could it be?" Derek was unhappy but he didn't show it at all. "I'm just afraid that my aunt and uncle will be exhausted from coming back and forth."
"Of course not. After all, we plan to stay at home for a few days." Amber came closer, "Derek, you don't want us to be here?"
Meredith looked at them having a conversation from afar. Their voices were not loud and she could not hear them clearly. However, it did not look like a harmonious family reunion as she had imagined.
It turned out that someone like Derek, who seemed to be omnipotent, would have this kind of trouble as well.
Meredith looked at him quietly and did not speak. She could not help but think of those people in the Masons, and then she actually developed a rare empathy with Derek.
Sometimes, the people who hurt you the most were not outsiders, but those who called themselves your family members.
Derek was a little impatient with the two of them. Just as someone came to clink glasses with him, he excused himself.
Soon, a group of young ladies from eminent families surrounded him. Being ignored, the couple chose to refrain themselves even though embarrassment and jealousy flashed across their faces.
Meredith looked at them, feeling bored, and decided to go back to her room to sleep. At this time, Amber suddenly looked up at the second floor. She said in a voice that was not loud but clearly audible, "Derek, I heard that you were married. Where is your wife today?"
When everyone present heard the news of Derek's marriage, they stopped what they were doing and looked over curiously.
Derek suddenly felt the coldness spreading around him. His marriage to Meredith was a secret of the Xaviers, and they should not have known about it.
Could it be that someone had devulged this secret?
Meredith was also shocked by the unexpected incident. She looked at Derek first.
Would he think that she was the one who let out the secret?
"Eh? Miss, you look a little unfamiliar. You don't look like a servant of the family. Are you my nephew's wife who I have never met before?"
Amber was satisfied with the silence of the scene. Derek had the headquarters of the Xavier Group in his hands. If he united with a powerful family by marriage, it would be even harder to get benefits from him.
Therefore, this was a rare opportunity. A privileged man like Derek got a wife who had been in prison, which would become a stain that he would never be able to erase in his life.
Meredith bit her lower lip. Although Amber pretended to be kind and warm-hearted, Meredith could see through this kind of person. Clara's acting skills were much better than Amber's.
"Why don't you talk? Did you have a fight with Derek? It's okay. Your Second Aunt will take responsibility and defend you. I won't let anyone bully you."
After Amber said those words, everyone's eyes focused on Meredith.
Derek also looked at her with his cold, emotionless gaze.
Meredith wore a faint smile, then tilted her head and looked at Amber innocently. "I'm sorry. I think you've mistaken me for someone else. I'm not the wife of your nephew. I'm just a servant."
When Meredith spoke, her expression was calm and her voice did not tremble at all. It was impossible to tell whether what she said was true or not.
"Oh, what's going on with you?" Amber dared to make such a fuss in front of everyone, so she must have evidence.
She had thought that Meredith would be filled with anger and jealousy seeing Derek talking with the ladies from the noble families. She had thought she would be able to trick Meredith if they could speak with each other.
But nobody would have thought that this young girl would not fall for this trick no matter what.
