Jeremy did not say a word. He had made up his mind that he would not betray Stephen, even at the cost of his life. 

Stephen extended a helping hand when he needed it the most. Although his mother could not be saved in the end, it at least allowed her to pass away with dignity. 

He looked at the South Regent with an unwavering gaze, not a trace of fear in his eyes. 

The South Regent had seen that look before. A long time ago, he had the same look in his eyes, but the person he looked at back then was Ethan. Then, Ethan defeated him time and time again, shattering his pride and resolve. 

The South Regent chuckled. “You remind me of myself in the past. But even if you refuse to say who’s behind you, I can guess it. It’s Stephen, isn’t it?” 

Jeremy was shocked. He did not expect the South Regent to get it on the first guess. 

Seeing his reaction, the South Regent confirmed his suspicion and knew what Stephen’s plan was. Stephen must have hired the man to infiltrate his company, searching for evidence of illegal conduct to take control of his business. 

“How much did he pay you?” The South Regent said, “I’ll give you double to work for me.” Jeremy said, “It’s useless no matter how much you offer.” 

The South Regent said, “Two million.” 

Jeremy remained silent. 

“Three million.”

“Five million.” 

Jeremy’s gaze remained as determined as ever.

The South Regent asked, “What regrets?” 

“I never got to give my mom a good day in her life, and I can’t repay Stephen.” 

The South Regent narrowed his eyes. 

After a while, he chuckled. “Heh. Your mother was indeed a pity. You remind me of Lord Rivers. I think if you had come to Riveria earlier, perhaps things might be different for you and her.” 

Images from three years ago quickly flashed in his mind. 

Beyond the borders, the South Regent was forced to invite Ethan out for a meal to rescue two of his trusted subordinates whom Ethan had captured. He even had to drive Ethan around. 

On the way back, the car drove slowly on the bustling street. At one intersection, the South Regent and Ethan saw a poorly dressed woman holding a child. She dropped a piece of bread, which rolled to the roadside. 

Cars whizzed past, and pedestrians hurried along, showing no signs of stopping. The woman held her child and looked anxiously in both directions. Her attempts to pick up the bread were repeatedly stopped by passing vehicles. 

The South Regent only glanced at her briefly. He was just about to resume his conversation with Ethan about getting his men back, but when he looked over at Ethan, he froze.
