Seeing how well Lana was recovering lifted my spirits, even if only slightly. Right now, her health was the one thing I was worried about most. If it weren't for her, I wasn't sure that I would've made it this far. Abigail's constant torment would've broken me long ago.
As I sat by Lana's bedside, she suddenly grabbed my hand and asked, "Samuel, where's Abigail? Why didn't she come with you today?"
Hearing Abigail's name made my chest tighten.
When Kayla was sick, Abigail spent a lot of time with me at the hospital. She'd been there for me and Kayla, showing kindness I hadn't expected. I didn't think Lana would still remember her, but somehow, she did.
The thought was bittersweet, leaving me both touched and unsettled. I didn't want to bring Abigail into this, so I gently stroked Lana's hand and said, "Be good, Lana. I'll take you to the amusement park when you're all better. How does that sound?"
Her face lit up instantly, the thought of a fun day out wiping away any questions about Abigail. "Really? Do you promise? You're the best, Samuel!"
When visiting hours ended, I stood to leave. Always sweet and understanding, Lana waved at me with a small, sad smile. "Samuel, I'll be waiting for you to come back!"
I waved back, smiling, but I nearly broke down as soon as I stepped outside the hospital. I couldn't explain it, but I thought of Kayla every time I saw Lana. They had the same gentle, innocent sweetness that made me want to shield them from the world.
If Abigail had been willing to help Kayla back then, maybe she'd still be alive. Maybe we wouldn't be separated by life and death. That thought had become a thorn lodged between Abigail and me—one that would never be removed.
As I stood there, lost in my thoughts, I suddenly heard the voice of Lana's doctor behind me.
