I clutched my chest and struggled to catch my breath, gasping painfully.
Ever since I got sick, I'd been dealing with insomnia, dizziness, and bouts of nausea. Even when I managed to fall asleep, nightmares jolted me awake. The constant exhaustion had been grinding me down.
Spotting a pharmacy nearby, I decided to buy a bottle of sleeping pills to get some much-needed rest. After paying for the pills and turning to leave, I suddenly heard a woman's sharp, shrill voice behind me.
"Josh, I'm telling you, you've been with Abigail for long enough. Why hasn't she shown any signs of being pregnant yet?
"You know what I told you! Seal the deal first, get her to have your kid, and then Samuel won't stand a chance. Abigail will kick him to the curb sooner or later!
"Even if he clings to her now, what's he gonna do? He'll have no choice but to step aside when the time comes."
That grating, familiar voice could only belong to Joshua's sister, Joanna.
I frowned and looked over, spotting Joanna clutching Joshua's arm as she lectured him impatiently.
Last time, Joshua had claimed that Abigail was pregnant with his child. I wasn't sure whether that was a lie or if Abigail had quietly taken care of the situation, but the whole thing had fizzled out.
Clearly, though, Joshua and Joanna were still determined to milk Abigail dry.
It wasn't my business, and I had no intention of getting involved. I decided to pretend I hadn't heard anything and turned to walk away.
But before I could slip out unnoticed, Joanna's sharp eyes landed on me.
