Emily looked at Hazel, who was being so brutally honest and frowned. “Hazel, are you angry because I refused to help you?” 

Hazel scoffed, her words dripping with sarcasm. “You’ve got it all wrong, Emily. I’m not angry. It’s just that everyone at my birthday party tonight is either rich or powerful. Sure, you might be staying at Finley’s place, but let’s be real–you’re just living under his roof. You’re not his wife, and his money isn’t yours. So, to put it bluntly, you don’t really qualify as some high–society lady.” 

Her gaze sharpened as she continued, “That means you have no right to attend the rest of the ball, and you definitely don’t have the right to wear such an expensive dress. I’m afraid you might ruin it, and you certainly wouldn’t be able to pay for it.” 

Hazel’s biting words made Emily’s face flush with anger. 

“My brother’s loaded. Do you think a million–dollar dress is a big deal? It’s nothing we can’t afford!” 

Hazel’s smirk only grew wider. “Oh please, Emily. You really like to talk big, huh? Sure, your brother’s famous in the medical field, but that doesn’t mean he’s raking in cash. Even if he’s making good money, he can’t possibly keep up with your spending.” 

Spending? 

I haven’t been exactly splurging on luxury clothes. 

She glared at Hazel. “That’s my brother’s business. He enjoys spending money on me. What does that have to do with you?” 

“You-” 

“You’re right. It has nothing to do with me,” Hazel snapped. “Now, take off my dress and get out of here.” 

Fine, Emily thought. If you want your dress back, you can have it. Without hesitation, she pulled off the dress and tossed it at Hazel. Then, she stormed into the closet, quickly changed into her own clothes, and left the party. 

As Emily disappeared from sight, Hazel angrily slammed the diamond necklace down on a nearby table. “Ungrateful brat! Do you really think you can just walk away from me like that?” 

She sneered, her eyes gleaming with a sinister plan. 

You’ll pay for this, Emily. Just wait and see.

As Emily stormed out of Hazel’s house, she was still fuming. Elias had been waiting outside for her the entire time. When he saw her emerge, he opened the car door and walked over to her, draping his jacket around her shoulders. 

“Emily, it’s getting chilly tonight. Why didn’t you bring a coat?” he asked with concern. 

Emily shot him a frustrated look, still sulking. “I’m not cold. Just leave me alone.” 

Elias immediately noticed something was off and asked, “Emily, what’s going on? You don’t seem yourself. Did someone upset you?”
