Sawyer inhaled deeply, his gaze filled with concern as he looked at her. “Your forgetfulness of me is a result of human instinct,” he said.
“When a person undergoes an experience too painful to bear, they instinctively forget many things as a form of self–protection. For instance, the memory of that night, you may have forcibly erased it from your mind.”
Freya sat on the steps, her legs slightly ben. The afternoon sun cast a slanted light on her, elongating her slender shadow on the ground.
Her hands were clenched tightly into fists, her lips pursed into a straight line, and her gaze was cold as she
stared into the distance.
The pain was still raw, so raw that even after three years, the mere mention of that child would make her tremble.
Sawyer chuckled lightly, his gaze resting on Freya. “You despise Nathaniel, don’t you?”
“In my opinion, he is truly heartless. He showed no mercy, even to his own flesh and blood. After all, the child was innocent.”
Freya’s eyes narrowed slowly, her voice cool as she responded, “Did you call me here just to rip open my old wounds and pour salt into them?”

“Do you remember Alcraville Women’s Prison?”
Freya’s fingers tightened slightly. How could she forget that nightmare?
Sawyer continued, “I’m actually a doctor.”
Freya looked at the handsome young man beside her in disbelief. She wouldn’t have been surprised if he had claimed to be a pig butcher, but his declaration of being a doctor took her aback.
Sawyer smiled, his gaze on Freya./’I believe you’ve heard about my life story, considering it’s been the talk
of Saeville.”
“I don’t mind sharing. My mother was a nurse in a small Southeastern country. She was the daughter of a local Chinese businessman, not a wealthy tycoon, but a humble man who ran a small supermarket.”
“She was an intern at a local private hospital when she caught the eye of a wealthy businessman named Lloyd who was there for a check–up. At the time, Lloyd had just entered into an arranged marriage for

“My mother had no interest in engaging in a scandalous affair with him. However, the next day, my grandfather was involved in a car accident while out for supplies, resulting in a crushed leg.”
Freya was taken aback.
Sawyer spoke as if he was recounting someone else’s story.
expression calm.
He continued, “My mother gave in, became his mistress, and later gave birth to me.”
“I was born into this world under embarrassing circumstances, hidden from sight. Despite being well- provided for, can you comprehend that feeling?”
