The Returning EX (John and Sophia) novel Chapter 1942

Chapter 1942 New Job

Serena shifted her focus back to the drafts in her hand, but she continued speaking to Cindy. “You’ll be sitting there from now on. That’s your spot.” Serena pointed at a spot, and Cindy turned around to find an office table that had been emptied out for her. “Okay, I got it,” Cindy replied hastily.

Serena didn’t say anything after that, and Cindy was too scared to walk off, so she stayed beside the rest of the apprentices and waited for Serena to give her directions. Serena wasn’t looking at her own drafts, but those that were made by one of her apprentices. Once she looked through the drafts, she pointed out all of the flaws that she found in them. She spoke in a rather stern tone, and her expression was dark as she pointed out some obvious issues. It was as if she were implying that those mistakes shouldn’t have been made.

Cindy knew that these well-known designers had rather odd temperaments, just like Yulia did. However, she couldn’t stop her heart from racing when she saw the way Serena acted. Cindy knew that a newbie like her was certainly going to make a bunch of mistakes in the future, but she would learn from it. I don’t even want to imagine how badly she’s going to criticize me in the future.

Once Serena was done analyzing all of the contents of the drafts, the apprentices hurried off to their own seats. Only then did Cindy dare to return to her seat. Serena went back to her own office and stayed inside for a while before she came out to approach Cindy. Serena knocked on Cindy’s desk and ordered Cindy to go over to her office for a talk.

Both of them entered Serena’s office, and Serena sat down before she looked up at Cindy. “Sit down. I know you. What made you decide to come here as an apprentice? I thought you’d be content with living the rest of your life with Ian.”

Cindy took the seat in front of Serena. “Life is pretty good, but I’d like to have my own career. This was what I majored in at university, so I didn’t want to let go of it.”

Serena raised an eyebrow. “If you didn’t want to let go of it, why did you end up working as Ian’s assistant? You’ve abandoned this field for quite a while.”

Cindy nodded in a rather helpless manner. “I didn’t have a choice. I needed the money.”

Serena scoffed. “What makes you say that? Is Ian really stingy with you?”

Cindy shook her head before explaining herself. “He’s really nice to me. He’s kind and generous, but I can’t rely on him forever. I need to have my own career.”

“That’s the right mindset to have,” Serena uttered with a nod. After that, she seemed to hesitate for a moment before speaking again. “Does Ian know our company’s boss?”

Cindy was shocked. She didn’t understand why Serena would ask such a question. Cindy shook her head. “He doesn’t know your boss. I told him about this place, but he said that he doesn’t know anyone here.”

Ian didn’t have a lot of connections. He wasn’t extremely friendly or outgoing, so he was often the first to leave an event, if he even attended it in the first place. He would never build relationships with the people in the production team, as it didn’t occur to him that those connections might be useful. So, he wasn’t helpful in introducing connections as he didn’t know a lot of people.

“Wasn’t it Ian?” Serena raised an eyebrow.

Cindy didn’t understand what was going on. “What is it? Why are you asking about this?”

Serena laughed without saying anything else. “It’s nothing. Go on with your work. You can ask me if you have any questions.” After that, Serena passed Cindy a folder of documents that consisted of tasks that a beginner apprentice had to complete. “You can pick one of the topics from here and start designing. Show me once you’re done.” Serena’s tone of voice was neither unpleasant nor pleasant—it was simply formal.

Cindy took the documents over and nodded before turning to leave Serena’s office. As Cindy was walking back to her seat, she continued thinking about what Serena said earlier. There was clearly something hidden behind her words, Cindy thought as she sat down with a frown.
