The Returning EX (John and Sophia) novel Chapter 2018

Chapter 2018 The Culprit

One of the strangers hastily questioned her. "What is it? What happened? What's up with your drawer? Did you lose something?" They looked like they had been searching for something earlier, so most of the people already figured out what was going on. Cindy let out a smile. "It's nothing." She had never been a talkative person, and her short sentence immediately dashed the hopes of her colleagues who wanted more gossip.

The stranger looked at Cindy's table for a while before her gaze landed on the broken drawer. Cindy ignored her and continued doing her work with her head lowered. After she finished the general outline of a sketch, she put her work aside. She wasn't thinking much about her missing documents, but Ian.

Time was rather tight for Cindy that afternoon. She had to go home to prepare a meal, and then she had to get a ride to the hospital and spend the remainder of her time eating with Ian. That was one flaw of a couple having different jobs—they'd find it harder to make time for each other if they each had their own schedules and duties.

That morning, Serena had called a few individuals into her office, but these individuals only went in for a while before coming back out. They didn't seem to show any significant changes in their expressions after they came out of the office, so Cindy couldn't deduce the sort of questions that Serena had asked them. Serena had given tasks to everyone except Cindy, so perhaps she was just calling them in to check on their progress.

When it was about noontime, Cindy tidied her desk and prepared to leave. She had a huge mission to complete that afternoon, so she had to be quick. However, right when Cindy was about to leave, she heard Serena calling her over. She hurried over to find another person standing in the room. It was the lady who had picked a fight with Cindy previously.

After taking one look at the lady's face, Cindy could guess what was going on. The girl's eyes were red—it was obvious that she had just cried. When she saw Cindy walking in, she pressed her lips together and turned her head away. Serena said to Cindy, "I found the person who pried your drawer open. She was the one who stole the files."

After Serena finished speaking, the lady spoke up for herself. "Sure. Yeah. I was the one who did it. The file has been destroyed. I know that the file is a ticking time bomb in my hands, so I burned it after taking it last night." The lady glared at Cindy, her neck muscles tense as she put on a resentful, angry look. "I just don't like how you get everything. Do you think you're that great because you have someone supporting you? I don't care if others are afraid of you, but I'm not."

Cindy didn't seem too intimidated by the lady's words. "Are you using your act of theft to show me that you're not afraid of me?"

The lady's expression turned stiff immediately. Then, Serena went to sit down with an evident look of displeasure. "Since the file has been destroyed, we can't recover it. But you've crossed my limits, Julia. You should know what to do from here onward."

The girl named Julia was well aware of her options. Even if Serena didn't hold this matter against her, she was ashamed to continue working here.

"Okay. I'll speak to Mary," Julia uttered.

Serena nodded. "Okay. Go ahead." Julia turned to give Cindy a long, resentful glare before she left. However, Cindy wasn't afraid of Julia at all and merely let out a scoff.

Once Julia left, Serena heaved a sigh of relief. "I can't believe something so huge happened when I have only been gone for a few days. I would be so embarrassed if others heard about this."

Cindy understood what Serena was trying to say. "I was almost done with reading the document. I'll go online to do a little more research, and if that doesn't work out, I'll go to Mary and tell her that I lost the document."

"I can print you a new copy if you need it. I just hope you don't take this to heart," Serena uttered while waving her hand. "I hope you approach this matter with an open mind. Once you achieve that inner peace, you'll be able to work on your own things without feeling bothered by others."
