Chapter 48
Two police officers were waiting at the iron gates of Grayson’s villa, their navy uniforms stark against the early morning mist. Very few people knew I lived here. What could they possibly want from me?
“Hello, officer. How can I help you?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
The taller officer stepped forward. “Good afternoon, Ms. Isabella Prescott. We’re investigating the accident that occurred the other day.”
“Oh, you mean the truck accident?” I replied quickly. “As I mentioned during the initial inquiry, my talent manager and I were nearly harmed, but thankfully, we came out unscathed.”
The officers exchanged a tense glance.
“Ms. Prescott, I’m afraid you’re not as safe as you think.” the other officer said gravely.
The morning breeze suddenly felt ice–cold against my skin. “What do you mean by that?”
The first officer pulled out a small notepad. “The truck driver’s wife came forward and confessed something crucial. According to her, someone contacted the driver, her husband, on the morning of the accident. This unknown individual offered him one hundred thousand dollars to complete a job. They even provided an advance payment of twenty thousand dollars.”
“A job?” The word felt heavy in my mouth as I murmured it aloud.
The officer’s gaze didn’t waver, flipping through his notes. “Yes. The job was to target you, Ms. Prescott. They provided the driver with your plate number and a photo. You were the intended victim in that accident.”
My legs went weak, and a chill ran down my spine at the implication. “Are you saying someone wanted to kill me?”
The officer nodded grimly. “That’s correct Based on our investigation, the truck had been monitoring the building since the morning Catherine had her interview with you. To ensure the driver went through with the plan, an unknown gave him a substance–claiming it was a vitamin or some courage booster.”
My hands trembled as I clutched my cardigan tighter around me. “But it wasn’t a vitamin, was it?”
“No.” He shook his head slowly, snapping his notepad shut. “Our tests revealed it was heroin or a similar controlled substance.”
“Heroin?” My voice wavered.
“Yes,” the officer confirmed. “The wife couldn’t accept how things turned out.”
“So, that’s why the car swerved…” My voice felt distant, even to me. “I thought he was drunk.”
“That’s correct, Isabella!” the investigator replied. “The full payment was wired to the driver’s wife this morning, prompting her to come forward”
I clenched my jaw. “Who sent the money?”
The taller officer scratched his head. “That’s what we’re still trying to trace.”
“We need to find out who might hold a grudge against you,” his partner said, pulling out a small notebook. “Anyone in particular?”
The people who came to mind were Charlotte or maybe Sabrina, But Charlotte wasn’t the type to go that far. She’d already managed to drive a wedge between me and my parents, which she believed had been her victory

halina was more likely of the two, but this didn’t add up with the livestream that day. Sabrina’s plan had only been to ruin my reputation as an artist,
“Could I speak with the driver? Iaded, grasping for answers. “I don’t remember anyone having that kind of hatred for me.”
Perhaps talking to the driver could provide some answers.
The officers exchanged uneasy glances,
“The driver is dead, Ms. Prescott,” one of them said.
“What?” My hand flew to my mouth, stunned.
“The couple in the other vehicle that collided with him. they didn’t survive either. They didn’t make it to the hospital. And honestly, considering the truck’s speed that day, you and your manager would have met the same fate if you hadn’t swerved.”
After the police issued their warning and reminded me to reach out if I recalled any details about the situation, they left Grayson’s car pulled up just as I was about to enter the gate.
As soon as he got out of the hack seat, he wrapped his arms around me. “Are you okay, Isabella? Martha called me in a panic. when she saw the police here”
I managed to smile, trying to steady my racing heart. “I’m okay. They probably got my address from the vehicle’s registration. Really, I’m fine.”
