“My mom’s gone. What do I need Jones Corporation for? Do whatever you want with it.” My voice was as flat as a straight line.

Mom lied to me. Money wasn’t everything. No amount of wealth could bring her back, so what use was Jones Corporation to me now?

There was a long silence on the line. I thought I would cry, but for some reason, not a single tear would come.

I said, “Nicholas, could you come pick me up and take me home this one time?”

He was silent for a while before finally responding. “Ariana, what tricks are you playing now?”

“Just this once…”

The next day, I waited in the hospital for Nicholas. This time, he didn’t walk slowly on purpose. Instead, he strode briskly. Though he looked worn from traveling overnight, his handsomeness still shone through.

Though he appeared somewhat aloof, I noticed the warmth and care he showed me upon seeing him.

Just as I had said, everything returned to the way it was. He embraced me warmly, giving me the most comforting hug I had received in a long while.

“Ariana, cry if you want to.”

I looked up at him in his embrace and stood on tiptoe to kiss his chin. The stubble on his chin pressed against my lips, causing a subtle itch.

“Honey,” I called out softly. “I have no tears.

He tensed slightly at my words. There was a hint of compassion in his embrace as he gently rubbed my head. “You haven’t called me honey in a long time.”

1 unbuttoned his suit and wrapped my arms around his waist through his white shirt. He seemed to have lost some weight.

Pressing my cheek against his chest, I murmured, “Nicholas, I have nothing left now. You’re all I have.”

“I’ll return to Nicholas‘ side, gather new evidence, and secure more money. Then, I’ll visit your grave and give you as much as I can. I’ll also reclaim what the Hawks owe me!”

The funeral day was drizzly. It wasn’t raining heavily, but enough to be irritating. It felt like something was gnawing at my heart as if something significant was about to happen.
