Nicholas saw me coming over and made a mover jet up to join me
in the bedroom. I pressed down on his shoulder, forcing him to lie back down. I plopped onto his back as if he were carrying me.
I reached out and took the phone from his hand, only then noticing that the string of rosary beads he always wore on his wrist was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s your rosary beads?” I asked him.
He glanced at his wrist and, as he withdrew his arm, patted mine. “I haven’t worn it in a while.”
I was quite surprised. Those rosary beads were so important to him that he would make a special trip back to the Hawk manor if he left them behind.
Was it because he and Claudia had finally consummated their relationship that he no longer needed to wear them? But upon seeing that he wasn’t in a good mood, I didn’t pursue the matter
further.
“Am I causing trouble for the company?”
He pinched the bridge of his nose and leaned back tiredly against. the sofa with his eyes closed. I stood behind him to massage his temples.
He didn’t answer, and I didn’t press on the issue. The soft yellow light from the lamp fell on both of us.
At that moment, there was an unspoken understanding between us like an old married couple who didn’t want to disturb the fleeting
peace.
