I had yet to snap back to my senses. While I was in a daze, Pete urged, “I’m downstairs at your place. Didn’t you ask me about the fireworks? Let me explain it to you properly.“”
I hesitated. I was utterly drained today, but Pete suddenly put on a coquettish tone just as I was about to refuse him.
“Ari, hurry up!”
“What do you want?”
“Come down! You can’t make me come all this way for nothing, can you?”
“I didn’t ask you to come.”
“You’re such a heartless woman. But you said the sooner, the better!”
Well, I did say that, but this was a bit too much.
My heart raced because I couldn’t distinguish the boundaries between us. I couldn’t tell whether this was what the push and pull dynamic between lovers was. But I didn’t want this.
“No. I’ll come find you tomorrow.”
Pete sounded upset. His voice was tinged with sorrow as he said, “Fine. But it’s really dark out here, and I’ve made it all the way here though…”
His voice gave me goosebumps, but I found it amusing at the same time. I was reminded of the “refreshing” part Nicholas mentioned to Jasmine at the hospital before.
My feelings, which had once died because of Nicholas, suddenly stirred again because of someone else. It felt refreshing to me.
