Nicholas’s expression changed quickly. It took just a second for him to regain his composure. He came over, took the small suitcase from my hand and hugged me.

“You walk so quietly. You’re like a cat.”

I pushed him away and looked into his eyes. “If not, I wouldn’t have heard your phone call.”

Nicholas lowered his gaze to meet mine. There was a faint disappointment in his eyes. “We agreed whoever left first would kiss the other. You didn’t keep our promise.”

A sudden imitation filled my chest. I could not believe he still remembered that so–called promise. Talking about promises with someone like him felt like an insult to the word itself.

Without warning, he cupped my face and almost fiercely bit my lips. “Dad’s health is poor. I just didn’t want him to worry.”

I stomped hard on his foot, which made him back away in pain. “That’s why you’re getting i quickly to ease his mind.” I finished the sentence he had left unsaid.

I turned away and did not look at him. As I was heading back to the room, I saw Claudia leaning over the second–floor railing while smiling at me.

“Nick, is Ariana angry because you comforted me to sleep last night?” she asked with a smile. “There’s really no need to be angry. We’ve been like this since childhood. You have probably comforted me to sleep more times than you’ve slept with her!”

Before I could finish, Nicholas caught up and lowered my hand. Gripping my hand, he turned and gestured to Claudia. “Go back to your room.”

I yanked my hand away forcefully. Claudia giggled coyly. “Okay. I’ll always listen to you.”

As she left, she could not resist one last taunt. “Ariana, don’t be angry with Nick. He works very hard every day.”
