Nicholas remained quiet without saying a word. He turned his back toward me, and his usually straight and proud back was now hunched over like a small mountain.
He took out his cigarettes. He rarely smoked, and it took him two tries before he managed to successfully light up his cigarette. Smoke began to swil in the air around him.
I couldn’t help but cough from the stench. If it weren’t for the unbearable pain taking over my body, I would have thought that the surreal situation before me was nothing but a dream.
Nicholas turned around to look at me. His dark eyes burned with hatred as he put out the cigarette with his bare hands. It was as if he couldn’t feel any pain as he said calmly, “That’s impossible.”
He looked down and did a sweep of my body. Unable to look any longer, he carried me to the showers with a frown.
The messy bed was no longer sleepable. After what felt like an eternity where I could die at any given moment, we managed to change rooms, and I was finally able to lay down and fall asleep.
Nicholas turned to me and said, “Your body is weak, so you shouldn’t attend Pete’s wedding tomorrow. I’ll help you give him your regards.”
I opened my eyes and saw Nicholas looking sharply at a corner of the room in the dark. So, that was what he wanted to tell me all along.
I closed my eyes, feeling too exhausted to even answer him.
Early the next morning, Claudia came knocking on our door. She wore a beautiful pink dress as she grabbed Nicholas by his sleeves, pulling him out of the hotel room.
Once they left, it took me some time to get up. My whole body felt weak, and my head felt like it was spinning
I laid my head on the headrest to steady myself before slowly getting up and using the wall as support. I slowly walked to the bathroom and began washing myself.
No matter what, I had to attend Pete’s wedding. The trip abroad would not be in vain if it meant that I could see him, even if I could only see him from afar.
I gave Yasmine a call, asking her to come and pick me up.
After a while, the doorbell rang. When I went to open the door, I was shocked to see that it wasn’t Yasmine by the door, but rather Pete, the groom–to–be!
Before I could come to my senses, Pete pushed open the door and squeezed his way into the room. “Let me hide at your place for a second.”
The second the door closed, I felt like my heart had skipped a beat. He bent over as he placed his hands on his knees, while he gasped for breath.
He looked up and gave me a bitter smile. “Nicholas told me you won’t be attending today. So, I–I didn’t think before secretly making my way here. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know when would be the next time I would be able to see you!”
He continued, “Ari, why don’t I just don’t get married? Why don’t I bring you away
