Nicholas's gaze instantly dimmed, but his voice remained full of affection. "Why not? We could if you wanted to."
I listened in silence, and Nicholas became even more anxious.
He gritted his teeth and said, "Ariana, I haven't eaten yet. Let's have a meal together. It's been a long time since I've had a proper meal. Can you keep me company?"
"Nicholas, you need to eat well to stay healthy and strong enough to fight off negative emotions. Take care of yourself. But I'm not hungry, so I won't be joining you."
Suddenly, there was a loud bang from the other end, startling me. It sounded like something had been slammed hard. Nicholas's hand trembled as he gripped the back of his chair.
He said sadly, "It'll only take a little of your time. I really need to talk to you. If you don't want to eat, we can go to a café for afternoon tea. I just feel there's a misunderstanding between us..."
"Nicholas," I softly interrupted him. "I'm sorry, but I really have something else to do. If you really want to eat, ask someone else to accompany you."
I had to get to the hospital for my shot. There was no time to waste. Whatever misunderstandings there might have been no longer mattered now.
I clenched my fists tightly as emotions surged within me. What did Nicholas take me for?
When I was constantly worried for him, it wasn't me or the child I carried that gave him hope. He sternly told me that we were divorced. From then on, Claudia was the only family he had left.
Now, I had a hospital appointment, but he was only thinking about himself. He didn't care about me or the child at all.
Why would I ever need to see him again? I just spoke kindly to him because he was a patient, and that was all.
I loved him with all my heart and fought against him with all my might. After the divorce, the best way to protect ourselves was to keep a distance, using the pain of the past as a reminder.
