Chapter 0053
I interned at a law firm in college. During that time, I ended up doing a lot of grunt work, such as filing case documents, which was quite tedious.
I could tell that Silas was imparting some very important information to me, so I was pleasantly surprised. After a brief moment of hesitation, I chose to hand the documents back to him.
After dealing with yesterday’s incident involving the homeless man, I felt compelled to be straightforward with Silas.
During the interrogation of the homeless man, I worried that if Nicholas harbored any malicious intentions toward me, it would lead to a lawsult with far–reaching consequences.
1 knew Pete and Silas could defend their law firm, but if they were implicated, I feared it could impact Yasmine.
Her family came from an academic background, esteemed by the general public. However, she was still vulnerable to manipulations by these wealthy influencers. This was her means of support.
Of course, I didn’t want to disappoint Silas either. I returned the documents as they were and calmly stated, “I’m sorry, Mr. Harmon. I’m not able to start just yet.”
I could see the surprise in his eyes. After all, I had fought hard for this job opportunity. But life was unpredictable, and none of us really knew what the future held.
Silas hummed casually in reply. He displayed no emotion, stood up, and offered me a glass of water. He asked, “Do you mind telling me why?”
His gesture unsettled me, evoking the feeling of someone about to seek legal counsel. I pursed my lips. holding onto the truth tightly.
I’d only crossed paths with him a handful of times, and I didn’t want to trouble him. After all, he hadn’t proven himself trustworthy.
“I’ll sort this out as quickly as I can,” I said.
Silas‘ voice carried a hint of regret. “How quickly? Your gap year is on the brink of becoming a fifth year.”
I stayed quiet. Lawyers tended to be professionally astute. I feared that any word from me could help him figure out everything.
Seeing my reluctance to speak, he didn’t push. “Fine. I’ll hold your position for you.”
I was genuinely grateful for his kindness, though I suspected Pete had a hand in arranging it for me.
“Let’s go,” Silas said.
To my astonishment, Nicholas and Pete entered just as our meals were served. I was surprised by how, despite their strained relationship, they managed to arrive together like that.
