"Alright, you head home. Call me when you get there."
Amara grabbed her phone and keys and headed back to her apartment. Once inside, she flopped onto her bed, but sleep was elusive.
The day's events had shaken her to the core, leaving her wide awake.
By the time three in the morning rolled around, Amara was still tossing and turning, though the rest of the city was deep in slumber.
Well, most of them were. Some folks, like Keith, were just getting off work due to their busy schedule.
After eventually wrapping up an urgent event, Keith drove back to Maple Crest. Exhausted, he parked his car and trudged toward the stairs.
But just a few meters from the entrance, he halted.
A sleek black car was parked ahead, and a tall, lean man leaned against its door, gazing up at the second or third floor, motionless. Who knew how long he'd been standing there?
Keith's brow furrowed as he strode forward.
The man by the car turned at the sound of Keith's footsteps. Upon recognizing him, his gaze darkened.
He moved to meet Keith, and they both stopped about a yard apart.
"Why do you come to see her at this hour?"
Finnian's face was stormy, his eyes glinting with a touch of malice.
It was past three in the morning. What business did he have with Amara at this time?
Surely Amara was asleep by now. Did he have a key to her place, or was she waiting up for him?
Keith knew Finnian had the wrong idea, but he didn't bother to set him straight. With a cold laugh, he said, "So what if I come to see my girlfriend? Surely you won’t meddle in this, right Mr. Everly?"
"Girlfriend?"
Finnian echoed the word.
