Josephine felt for the door handle. She opened the door and bolted as if a tiger were after her. She ran all the way back to the bedroom. Upon opening the door, she hurried to the bed and hid beneath the sheets.
Her heart pounded in her chest, and she couldn't stop shivering. She covered her ears with her hands. Fleeting images flashed across her mind, and she felt intense pain in her head.
Avery opened the door and immediately spotted her. She crept toward Josephine and pulled the blanket off her. "I found you!"
She intended to frighten Josephine, but her smile faded at the scene before her. Josephine curled up with her hands over her ears. Her eyes were shut, and her face was as pale as a ghost.
"Josephine, what's wrong?" Avery tapped her shoulder.
Josephine's eyes flew open, and she immediately lunged at Avery. She hugged Avery as if her life depended on it.
Avery was stunned. Her hands froze midair as she didn't know what to do. A short while later, she patted Josephine on the back. "There, there. Don't be afraid. I'm here with you."
Josephine hugged Avery's neck.
Josephine had numerous distressing thoughts and memories of being in a gloomy place. Tears streamed down her face.
She couldn't remember anything, but the fear and sorrow overwhelmed her. The emotions stung her. It was a strange feeling she wasn't accustomed to.
Avery coaxed her for a long time before she calmed down. When Avery realized it, she was already asleep.
Avery put her on the bed and pulled the blanket over her. She then reached out to wipe her tears.
Although Josephine was asleep, her brows remained furrowed. She was still feeling miserable, even in her sleep.
Avery sat beside her for a while. Then, she sighed and went downstairs.
She waited for Josephine to wake up. However, it didn't happen.
The sunset sent golden rays cascading through the window onto Avery's feet. She studied the canvas before her. She was almost done.
On the drawing, Josephine beamed radiantly. It was a smile she never saw on Josephine after knowing her for so long.
Avery put her brush down when she saw Mrs. Larson descending the stairs. She asked, "Is she still asleep?"
Mrs. Larson sighed and shook her head. Dr. Halliday came down beside her.
Avery stepped forward and asked, "What's wrong with her?"
Dr. Hallilday shook his head. "We can't find the cause."
They fell silent.
Mrs. Larson said, "Ms. Green, when you played with her several days ago, she could stay awake. Today, she slept halfway through the game."
"Where's Lewis?"
Mrs. Larson replied. "He left in the morning and hasn't returned yet. He's been busy these past few days."
Avery smirked, "All he ever thinks about is work. He doesn't care about Josephine's well-being and keeps her confined in the house."
Mrs. Larson quickly came to his defense. "He's just afraid something will happen to Madam."
"Nonsense. I think he's afraid someone will run off with Josephine. He has always been shameless."
Sometimes, Avery felt tickled at the thought of Lewis' actions. It was understandable if he was wary of men around Josephine, but he reacted all the same toward women. She wondered if he had lost it.
Lewis did everything possible to force her out of Elysium back then. He wanted to stop her from contacting Josephine.
Avery was dissing Lewis when she received a call from Tyler urging her to go home. She walked out as she spoke on the phone.
Tyler said, "Avy, please refrain from visiting Josephine for a few days."
