Claire let out a derisive snort, clearly unimpressed.
“Maintaining order? More like maintaining Vanessa’s innocence!” she retorted sharply.
“The patient isn’t complaining about the noise or exhaustion, nor are they asking to rest. You’re in such a hurry to get us out because you’ve got something to hide.”
“How dare you speak like that?” The headmistress’s voice rose, anger sparking in her eyes.
“I dare speak the truth. Even as the headmistress, you don’t have the right to stop the patient from identifying the real culprit in her attack. If you continue to interfere, I’ll have no choice but to suspect you’re intentionally shielding a murderer.”
“Today, Irene must identify the assailant, and no one will stop her.” Claire’s firm stance only served to enrage the headmistress further.
The headmistress’s face darkened, and a vein pulsed on her forehead. She felt an overwhelming urge to silence Claire, but with so many onlookers, she restrained herself. “You’re utterly unreasonable. If you keep causing trouble, I’ll have security escort you out.”
Claire, unfazed, stepped forward and locked eyes with the headmistress, “Go ahead, call them. Let the whole hospital see how the esteemed headmistress protects a murderer. Let’s see how long you can hold onto your position then.”
Her words left the headmistress momentarily frozen, her hand suspended mid-air, poised to press the alarm button.
Nathan, witnessing the headmistress being cornered, felt a pang of sympathy and dashed forward, grabbing Claire’s arm with fiery eyes. “Why are you embarrassing us? Get home now!”
Claire shook off her father’s grip, her eyes blazing. “You’ve always favored Vanessa, the adopted daughter, leaving your own flesh and blood to suffer unjustly for five years! If you’re not ashamed, why should I be? Today, I’m standing up for justice.”
“You...” Nathan’s face turned ashen with rage, yet he was powerless against Claire’s resolve.
Adah was on the brink of tears. “Claire, stop this madness. Can’t we settle this at home?”
