"Not happy with me, huh?"
Victor stormed out, fuming.
"Victor!" Claire called out in a panic.
Victor paused at the doorway but didn’t turn around. Hearing the urgency in Claire’s voice, his heart softened, and his mood lifted considerably.
"Can you not tell the Linwood family I'm here?" Claire's voice was tinged with a hint of pleading.
Victor wasn't unreasonable. Knowing Claire was innocent, he certainly had no intention of adding to her troubles.
His tone softened, "Don't worry, I won’t tell them."
After a brief pause, he added, "I won’t tell Vincent or Brian either."
Claire breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
Her gratitude instantly dissipated Victor’s anger. His voice became lighter, "Take care of yourself. I'll visit when I have the chance."
With that, he left.
The hospital room fell silent.
Claire felt much better and even regained her appetite. She returned to her meal while Sean sat by the window, engrossed in a book.
Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow on him, accentuating his tall and graceful figure. He was absorbed in his reading, and the light threw gentle shadows across his face, making his features even more striking.
His fingers lightly held the corner of a page, occasionally flipping it as he read. The light reflected off his glasses, adding a subtle gleam that highlighted his deep-set eyes.
Claire glanced up, and the scene filled her with an unexpected warmth. People around her came and went, but few truly cared for her.
She had once believed that Vincent, her childhood friend, truly cared for her, but reality had given her a harsh wake-up call. To the wealthy elite, she was just a poor outsider.
The Linwood family was like that, as were Brian and Victor, and many others...
