Sherilyn stepped out of the car, holding onto Gilbert's arm.
Francis stood at the door to greet them. "You're here."
"Uncle!"
Jenna looked up with a mixture of politeness and eagerness. "Where's Cousin James?"
Francis smiled down at his little niece and gestured inside. "He's in his room."
"Can I go find him?"
"Of course." Francis nodded with a chuckle. "Do you remember where his room is, Jenna?"
"I do!"
Jenna nodded earnestly. "Uncle, I'm going in!"
"Alright."
With permission granted, Jenna dashed past the adults, her little legs carrying her quickly inside.
"Jenna, slow down!"
Sherilyn shook her head with a hint of exasperation and turned to Francis. "I'll go get them."
"Thanks for that."
"Don't mention it."
Sherilyn followed Jenna inside, but the little girl was already halfway up the stairs.
"Oh, that girl..."
Sherilyn sighed but couldn't help smiling. She decided not to rush and slowed her pace, only to meet Caroline at the foot of the stairs.
Caroline's wheelchair was positioned there, her caretaker having just carried her down and settled her in.
Sherilyn kept her gaze steady, pretending not to notice.
"Sherilyn."
But Caroline wasn't one to let things lie.
Predictably, she called out to Sherilyn.
Sherilyn frowned slightly, paused, and then turned to look at her.
They locked eyes, neither speaking at first.
Caroline scrutinized her, a faint smile playing on her lips.
