Melody's body was sore. Jeremy had worn her out.
She glanced at him, lifted the quilt, and started to get up.
Jeremy spoke again. "Are you and Jason very close?"
He wasn't familiar with her friends, yet he remembered the name.
Melody didn't know why he brought up Jason, but she nodded. "We're good friends."
When she was little and frail at the orphanage, other kids stole her food. Jason always got it back for her, and they had stayed close ever since.
Jeremy's dark eyes were unreadable. "Keep your distance. He might carry germs."
Melody retorted, "He works in auto repair, but he's very clean. Don't talk about him like that."
Jeremy's face stayed impassive. Remembering Jason's grease-stained shirt, he said evenly, "He looked dirty."
Melody's frown deepened. She disliked him talking that way. As such, she insisted, "Not every job is glamorous. He earns an honest living. Saying that makes you sound mean."
She whispered the last word, yet Jeremy caught it.
He stared at her coldly. "I'm mean?"
Melody knew she shouldn't have said it, but Jason and Felicia were dear to her. She couldn't let him belittle them.
She pressed her lips together, a stubborn look in her eyes.
Jeremy laid his book aside, his voice turning cold. "Get out."
Melody opened her mouth, but noticing his anger, she had no words. She turned and left.
