Melody looked over at Jeremy. He showed no reaction, offered no greeting, and simply watched her calmly as if she were a stranger on the street.
She tugged at the corner of her mouth, but no words came out. She mumbled a clumsy excuse and ran toward the building.
Tiffany saw her soaked from head to toe and frowned. "You got caught in the rain? You were on an IV yesterday. Don't get sick."
When she turned around, she saw Jeremy and Krystal walking over. Then, Jeremy hung his umbrella on the railing.
Tiffany blurted, "You didn't walk in with Dr. Chesson?"
Melody hadn't even known Jeremy would be at the hospital tonight. She lowered her eyes and said nothing, heading straight off to change clothes.
When she came back out, Tiffany handed her a mug of cold-remedy mix. "Drink this first so you don't catch a chill."
The moment Melody took the cup, Jeremy approached. His face was blank again, and he looked distant and aloof.
If not for the small scratch on the back of his raised right hand, which she had accidentally left there last night, she would have had trouble believing that the man now brushing past her had spent the previous night tangled with her in the wildest intimacy.
Jeremy's cold gaze met hers. His brow lowered slightly as he ordered, "Draw blood for Bed 12 now."
Before Melody could nod, Tiffany jumped in. "I'll go. Finish that drink and rest for a minute. You just came through the rain."
She shot Jeremy another look and muttered under her breath, "Some people bring an umbrella and never think to share."
Tiffany left with the tray of supplies, but Jeremy stayed where he was.
He looked at Melody and said in a flat tone, "You really know how to win sympathy. This is already the second time."
The first time, it was a stomach ache. This time, she got caught in the rain.
