A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 110

Jeremy's reply left Melody reeling. By the time she gathered herself, he had already gone.

The rain lasted all night and only stopped the next morning.

Once Melody finished drawing blood, she waited for the next shift to arrive so that she could clock out.

Carrying her treatment tray out of the ward, she nearly bumped into Jeremy as he came in. She opened her mouth to greet him, but he treated her as invisible, so she stayed silent.

At the nurses' station, another nurse was talking with Krystal. Melody's eyes fell on the coat draped over Krystal's shoulders. It was Jeremy's coat.

Jeremy was germophobic. At home, she could hardly touch his things, yet Krystal now wore his coat around her shoulders.

Krystal couldn't have grabbed it herself. Jeremy must have given it to her.

That kind of consideration was something Melody never enjoyed.

Her heart felt as though pricked by a needle, a small sharp hurt.

She lowered her lashes and forced herself not to look at Krystal's way.

Back at the desk, the nurse who had been chatting with Krystal called out to Melody with a smile. "Dr. Finnigan, if you want to know more about Dr. Chesson, you should ask Ms. Wardolf. Other than Dr. Franklin's crew, she's the one he's closest to."

Melody lifted her head, puzzled, and saw Krystal frowning. "I'm not after his hobbies. I was asking about his usual work style and how he treats patients."

After speaking, Krystal glanced at Melody. When their eyes met, she quickly looked away. She said expressionlessly, "Never mind. Forget I asked."

As soon as Krystal was out of earshot, the nurse shook her head at Melody. "I didn't tell her a thing. She's sneaking around trying to find out about Dr. Chesson. She thinks no one can see through her."

Melody pressed her lips together and answered nothing. She knew most nurses and doctors had a touch of hostility toward Krystal.

Krystal was beautiful, capable, and carried herself with pride.

At almost every weekly meeting, the department head singled her out for praise—a level of attention once reserved for Jeremy alone.

People treated Melody kindly because they knew about her hearing loss and even pitied her.
