A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 129

Melody's voice was soft as she looked at Jeremy with a hint of hesitation.

Jeremy turned to her, looking at her quietly. His tone was flat. "What is it you want to say?"

Melody pressed her lips together, looking a little defeated. "I shouldn't have accused you of targeting people that day."

"No one's targeting any of you." His dark eyes were steady. "I told you, you think too highly of yourself. Nobody wants to waste time on you."

Melody's hand curled tightly into a fist. His words brought her back to that day at lunch when he said without a second thought that they might not even get married.

While staring at him, she blurted, "So, do you think being with me is a waste of time too?"

Jeremy frowned slightly. His white coat was spotless, every detail immaculately in place—just like him.

He thought her question had no logic and no connection to the conversation. He didn't want to answer it. And instinctively, he felt like answering it would just lead to more trouble.

His voice was cool, with a hint of distance. "What you're doing right now is wasting time."

She froze. Bitterness welled up inside her. She'd known for a long time that he was reserved and distant because of his childhood. That was why she tried so hard to be good to him, to make him happy.

Even Andrew knew she was most afraid of Jeremy and always listened to him, but what he didn't know was that she wasn't afraid of Jeremy; she was afraid of making him upset.

She thought she was prepared. No matter how cold he was, as long as she was careful enough, eventually, he'd warm up. Even if he was all thorns, she never thought about backing away, but she'd overestimated herself, and it still hurt.

She looked at him with clear eyes, filled with a sorrow that couldn't be put into words.

"Jeremy." Krystal's calm voice came from nearby. She had just stepped out of the conference room with a stack of files still in her hands.
