Melody didn't expect to see Jeremy as soon as the elevator doors opened. She had been deliberately avoiding him. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing left to say between them.
She stepped aside slightly, planning to wait for him to come out before going in.
However, when Jeremy noticed her evasive movement, something inside him flared.
She hadn't gone home for days now, practically living in the department.
Being avoided like this grated on him. His gaze darkened as he stepped out of the elevator.
Just as Melody was about to enter, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back toward the office.
The doctor's office was empty. The moment the door closed behind them, his emotions surged to the surface. He turned toward her and growled in a low voice, "Have things been that busy in the department?"
Otherwise, why hadn't she gone home?
Her wrist still hurt where he was gripping it. She moved her hand slightly. "Can you let me go first?"
His gaze was sharp and direct. He was clearly on edge, but reason held him back. He let go of her wrist and said flatly, "Your stuff at home is taking up space. I don't want to touch it."
She hadn't gone back in days but vaguely remembered having done some laundry before she left. Then, she nodded. "Okay. I'll go back and take care of it tonight."
Jeremy frowned. "You're working the night shift."
"I'll come back tonight."
"Are you still planning to come back?" His brow furrowed even deeper, not realizing how wrong his words sounded.
She hesitated before nodding.
He didn't say anything else and stared at her, but his mind flashed to the magazine Caleb had shown him earlier.
She was sprawled lazily over a desk, wearing a loose white shirt. Her long black hair was draped around her shoulders, and beneath the table, her long pale legs peeked out.
Her body proportions were perfect.
