A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 199

It was natural for Melody to be upset. She didn't like how Jeremy had criticized her friends.

After that exchange, Melody stared straight ahead and repeated herself, saying, "I'm grateful for what you did today. You can think of me as owing you a favor. If you'd prefer to cash it in, that's fine too.

"But Jason and Felicia are important to me, and you don't get to interfere with my social life."

Jeremy glanced at Melody through the rearview mirror. Expressionlessly, he said, "What's there in your social life that's worth wasting my time to interfere with? I'm just reminding you, that's all. It's up to you whether you want to listen or not."

His words made it sound as if Felicia and Jason were trashy people.

Melody retorted, "The way you're talking right now is already disrespectful to my friends." Though her voice was soft, her tone was adamant. It was as if Jeremy had done something truly terrible.

Jeremy was so mad that he could only chortle. He had come straight to the police station to pick her up after getting Ophelia's phone call. He had even taken care of her friend's problems. But now, he had to sit here and listen to her tell him off.

Jeremy didn't have much patience, especially when it came to things outside of work. He never liked wasting time and energy on random things and people, but he had made an exception today for Melody.

Suddenly, he pulled over and parked the car by the side of the road. Then, he turned on all the lights in the car before he turned to look at her.

There were no emotions in his dark eyes other than a hint of iciness that swirled with the calmness of his gaze.

He stared at Melody, and though his tone remained neutral, the words themselves were anything but kind.

"Respect? How do you want me to respect them? By going to the police station? Or more specifically, what about them deserves my respect? Are they academicians or Nobel laureates? What exactly have your friends contributed to society?"

Jeremy's voice sounded especially clear in the car, and that clarity made Melody feel even more upset. Her chest ached with every breath she took.

"But they're my friends," she mumbled.

Jeremy blurted, "What have your friends got to do with me?" He was getting quite frustrated. He hadn't intended to argue with Melody today. In fact, it had been the complete opposite.
