Jeremy then walked over to Melody's side of the car and knocked on the window, signaling for her to roll it down.
Melody did so, and Jeremy handed her the bag.
There was an obvious hint of annoyance in his voice. "No eating in the car." After a pause, he begrudgingly added, "If you really do want to eat it, then you have to finish it within 30 minutes."
Then, he turned and went back to the driver's side.
He didn't get in though. He simply stood with his back against the car. At that moment, no one could tell what he was thinking about.
The item Jeremy handed Melody was a cake. It was the one that she'd passed by but didn't get to buy.
This was the result of Harold's nagging. He had said that he could tell that the couple were fighting, so he had asked Jeremy to try to placate her. Plus, according to him, women were easy to placate. "Just give them what they like," he had said.
Though Jeremy didn't think that he had done anything wrong, he had still gone in to buy the cake when he happened to drive past the pastry shop.
He figured that placating one's girlfriend was also a required course for being a boyfriend. And since he was treating all of this like a research paper, he was okay with taking it more seriously.
However, it seemed like he had forgotten that the pastry shop hadn't even been on his way home.
As Melody held the cake in her hands, the ball of frustration ricocheting through her seemingly came to a pause.
She looked in Jeremy's direction, but all she saw was his tall, straight back.
She didn't quite know what to do with the cake, neither did she dare to grip it too tightly.
She couldn't figure out what Jeremy meant by this, nor did she even know where to start. It was already second nature to her to worry that she could potentially be overthinking things again.
…
In the end, the cake was brought home.
