That night, Melody had a nightmare.
She dreamed that while she was sleeping, someone suddenly pulled open the curtains and started taking pictures of her, flashing the bright lights directly at her.
The blinding flashes made her feel incredibly uncomfortable.
When she woke up, she found herself drenched in sweat.
Her phone was ringing non stop too. It was Jason calling.
She took a moment to calm herself before answering.
Jason said, "I'm downstairs. I'm here to pick you up."
Still shaken from the nightmare, Melody felt a sense of relief as soon as she heard Jason's voice. She quickly responded, "Okay, wait for me for a bit."
As Melody reached for the door after changing clothes, her hands were still trembling. She was scared, unsure of what she might see when she opened the door.
She closed her eyes, twisted the doorknob with all her strength, and then heard the familiar sound of Echo whining.
In that instant, her worried heart finally settled.
…
When Melody went downstairs, Jason was standing next to his SUV. He looked like a gangster.
She couldn't help but ask, "Why are you dressed like that?"
Jason was wearing black workwear, with a buzz cut and tan skin. He was tall, strong, and looked intimidating too. Anyone who didn't know him might think he was looking for trouble.
But Jason didn't think anything of it. He seriously responded, "I'm here to protect you."
"Did Felicia tell you to?"
"You should've told me to," he replied with some displeasure.
Melody forced a smile and comforted him, saying, "I didn't want to disturb your and Tiffany's date, and it's not that big of a deal anyway."
Jason furrowed his brows and corrected her, saying, "There was no date."
Melody figured that he was embarrassed since he had only ever interacted with her and Felicia since his childhood.
Back when they were in school, someone had once passed Jason a love letter. It scared him so much that he didn't go to school for three days.
Melody knew him well, so she didn't tease him further. Instead, she simply sighed and said, "Once this whole thing is over and Felicia comes back, I'll treat you both to dinner."
After that, she didn't say anything more.
She planned to have Jason drop her off in front of the hospital, but instead, he drove into the parking lot.
He said, "I'll walk you up."
Melody knew that he was worried about her safety, so she didn't refuse. But as soon as they left the parking lot, they ran into Jeremy and Harold.
She paused for a moment.
When Jeremy looked at her, she immediately turned her head to the side.
