It was obvious that Andrew wasn't convinced. So, Melody carefully typed out a message on her phone and placed it in front of him.
She wrote, "Dad, I'm sorry. When I went for my check-up at the hospital this afternoon, Dr. Jangger said my temporary hearing loss was caused by nerve stimulation, likely due to the injury I sustained to my ear a few days ago.
"He assured me that I should recover with two days of rest."
Andrew was the one who had set up Melody's meeting with Simon. Now that Melody had brought it up, he had the chance to confirm it himself.
He studied Melody for a moment before letting out a deep sigh. "Today was supposed to be a joyful occasion. I never expected it to turn out like this." Then, he turned to Jeremy and asked, "How's Tessa doing?"
Jeremy replied, "Her emotions have stabilized for now. But she can't handle any further stress, given that her condition is already in the late stages."
Andrew's expression grew troubled. "At the end of the day, this was Mel's fault. Once her hearing recovers, she should apologize and take responsibility."
He hesitated briefly before adding, "Our family will also cover the compensation."
Laura let out a mocking laugh. "You really are the saint of the century, constantly cleaning up after everyone.
"I haven't even begun to hold her accountable for completely ruining Krys' recognition banquet!"
It had been a day meant for celebration, yet everything had descended into chaos when Tessa suddenly collapsed at the event.
The calls they'd received came nonstop that night, each one asking what had happened. It was a miracle that Laura had managed to hold back her frustration until now.
However, Krystal remained indifferent. "Tessa's condition was already precarious. It's no surprise that any emotional distress would cause her to faint."
Laura comforted her and said, "Krys, don't be upset. I'll arrange another banquet for you."
"Don't bother. One farce was enough." With that, Krystal turned and headed upstairs.
However, she suddenly paused halfway up and looked down at the group from her elevated position.
Her tone was cool and detached. "If you're planning to apologize to Tessa, at least wait for a while. Right now, she needs rest."
Laura stood up, her gaze sharp and unreserved as it landed on Melody. "Useless girl. You ruin everything you touch."
Even though Melody couldn't hear a word, Laura's expression had said enough.
Melody pressed her lips together as she stood before Andrew, unable to utter a single word in her defense.
She knew this meant that he had spoken to Simon and confirmed that her condition was genuine.
She accepted the money and replied, "Thank you, Dad."
After that, the ride home was steeped in silence.
In truth, Melody had never been much of a talker—mostly because Jeremy disliked noise.
But this silence was different—it was suffocating, like Melody was nothing more than air, simply an invisible presence.
That eerie quiet lasted until they arrived home.
The moment Jeremy switched on the living room lights, the stillness seemed to lift, but only a little.
He turned to her, his voice slow and deliberate. "Let me see your hearing aid."
He knew Melody could read his lips.
