Melody understood Jeremy's words. She lowered her gaze, took out her hearing aid, and placed it on the table. She then pushed it slowly toward him.
Melody had only ever used two pairs of hearing aids over the years of dealing with her hearing impairment. Each one typically lasted between five to eight years.
The first had been a gift from Jeremy, and she had carefully tucked it away in her small keepsake box.
The second was a reward from Andrew when she got into Jembina School of Medicine. She had been using it for nearly seven years now.
Jeremy picked up the device and examined it, ensuring that there were no issues with it.
Just then, his brows furrowed slightly as he shot Melody a sharp gaze.
Melody, sitting on the small sofa, sent him a WhatsApp message.
"The hearing aid is fine. Dr. Jangger said it's nerve-related, stimulated by stress."
Jeremy glanced at his phone before lifting his gaze again. "Why didn't you come upstairs with me this afternoon?"
Melody hadn't expected that question. Her lashes fluttered as she lowered her head and typed on her phone.
But after a few seconds, she deleted what she had written. She didn't know how to explain things to Jeremy.
Should she tell him that she had nearly collided with a hospital bed and gotten scared?
She bit her lip, typed again, and then erased it once more. She didn't want to appear weak in front of him.
Despite this, Jeremy showed no impatience even as the silence stretched on. His deep gaze simply remained fixed on Melody, as if he was determined to wait for an answer.
The longer he stared, the more nervous Melody became. Her fingers tightened around her phone, unsure of what to do.
Then, Jeremy's phone suddenly rang—the hospital was calling.
He picked up his phone, glanced at her briefly, and said in a detached tone, "Forget it. I won't force you if you don't want to say it."
With that, he walked into his study.
Melody finally let out the breath of relief. She rubbed her ear lightly before picking up the hearing aid.
That brand was Cheryl's absolute favorite, which meant that Melody had ended up with quite a few pieces from it as well.
She unzipped the hidden compartment on the bear's back and revealed its storage pouch.
Inside it were countless folded paper notes.
She pulled one out that had yellowed with age and carefully unfolded it carefully. The handwriting was faded but still familiar.
"I want to be with Cheryl and Jeremy forever."
That had been Melody's sixteenth birthday wish.
Every year since then, she'd write down a new birthday wish and tuck it inside the pouch.
Melody then reached for the newest one.
On it, she had written, "I hope Jeremy lives a peaceful and happy life."
