A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 56

It was an expensive Van Cleef & Arpels women's watch.

After handing it over, Ophelia took out a similar box and gave it to Melody. "This one's for you."

Melody quickly shook her head. "Ophelia, this is too expensive."

"What's expensive about it?" Ophelia's tone was indifferent. "You're going to marry Jeremy anyway. Sooner or later, it'll be yours."

The atmosphere at the dinner table instantly turned tense.

Owen cleared his throat. "We're having dinner. Why bring this up now?"

Andrew chimed in, "There's no rush. Melody's and Jeremy's careers are just starting. Young people should focus on their work first."

Melody lowered her gaze and stared at the food on her plate. This was the kind of conversation she didn't need to participate in.

"Today is Cheryl's death anniversary. I don't want to discuss this," a cold voice broke the silence. Jeremy set down his cutlery with an unreadable expression as he looked at Ophelia.

Nevertheless, Ophelia remained composed. "You and Melody have been engaged for a long time."

Melody tensed up slightly. She had been just 20 when she and Jeremy got engaged, and five years had passed since then.

Ophelia said, "You can't keep delaying her like this."

Jeremy's eyes darkened. When his gaze swept over Melody, he hesitated for a moment. Then, after a brief pause, he said, "I never agreed to this engagement in the first place."

Neither Cheryl nor Melody had initiated it—Owen had arranged it himself.

Melody's eyelashes fluttered slightly at his words, and her fingers unconsciously tightened around her fork.

Owen frowned at Ophelia. "Why are you talking about this now? If you want to talk about it, do it at home. We came here today for Krys."

"But I actually think this is a good time to discuss it," Laura suddenly said.

She glanced at Ophelia, then at Melody beside her, with a barely noticeable crease forming between her brows.

She said, "Andrew and I have discussed Jeremy's engagement. We've decided to respect his wishes. If he doesn't want to go through with it, we support him."

Laura's words were casual, but she made herself clear—if Jeremy wanted to call off the engagement, he only needed to say so.
