Jeremy had gone back to his room to change. His voice was calm as he said, "I'll drive you to the hospital."
Melody nodded and followed him downstairs.
…
When they arrived at the hospital, the car stopped at the entrance.
It didn't seem like Jeremy intended to go inside.
Melody bit her lip. "Thanks. I'll head in now."
Jeremy gave a quiet hum and offered nothing more.
Meanwhile, Melody's body still felt a little uncomfortable, but her mood was light.
And she got lucky—there was not a single difficult patient the whole night.
The next morning, when she handed over her shift, Tiffany looked at her in surprise. "You worked the night shift, didn't you? How do you still look so refreshed?"
Usually, after pulling a night shift, nurses looked like they'd been possessed by some kind of vengeful spirit.
Instead of answering, Melody asked, "Is Dr. Chesson here yet?"
She had spent the whole night trying to wrap her head around it—he had said they were a couple! She couldn't wait to see him to confirm that she hadn't just dreamt it up.
Tiffany clicked her tongue. "Something's definitely up. Spill it. What did you do?"
Even though Melody had always liked Jeremy, she rarely asked about him so openly. And whenever she saw him, she was always so careful, as if she were walking on thin ice.
Tiffany narrowed her eyes and was about to press further when a voice interrupted them.
"Someone's in a good mood this morning," Harold said.
Melody turned around and saw that the doctors had arrived for their rounds.
She looked up and immediately spotted Jeremy in the crowd.
He was flipping through a stack of patient files with his head slightly lowered. The loose strands of his hair fell over his brow, and the angle from which she was looking at him made the bridge of his nose look even sharper.
"Melody, what are you staring at?" Tiffany nudged her. "Dr. Franklin is asking about the situation in the ICU last night."
Melody snapped back to reality and quickly handed her notes to Harold.
Then she heard him say, "Angelica and Nancy are back, so the ICU is fully staffed again.
"Ms. Wardolf, you should switch back. I heard from Caleb that the old man in Bed 4 has been asking about you."
Caleb then told her that Jeremy was still in the wards, so she waited for him in the office.
The other doctors noticed the thermos in her hands and started teasing her, "Ms. Wardolf, aren't you being a little too sweet? Bringing Dr. Chesson breakfast this early? Didn't you just finish a night shift? If I were Dr. Chesson, I'd be so touched."
Melody's face flushed.
She lowered her head, trying to hide her embarrassment. She hadn't even had time to explain that Ophelia had asked her to bring it when Jeremy walked in.
Krystal was with him, and both of them looked unusually serious.
Jeremy's gaze immediately landed on Melody before he furrowed his brows slightly.
Then, before she could say anything, one of the other doctors spoke up, "Dr. Chesson, you're lucky. Ms. Wardolf brought you breakfast first thing in the morning. How enviable."
Melody quickly tried to explain, "It's not from me…"
But before she could finish, Jeremy cut her off, "Get out."
He tossed the files in his hand onto the desk with a cold expression, and his voice was completely indifferent.
"I don't need anything from you."
