Jeremy silently looked at Melody after he finished speaking.
Melody didn't react at first. Instead, she remained sitting on the ground as she looked up at him.
The collar of his loungewear was slightly loose and revealed faint red marks on his collarbone—they were the marks she had left.
No one knew who had been more caught up in the moment, but Melody knew he must be covered with traces all over.
It was the first time for both of them—clumsy, yet deeply intense. They were both driven by instinct.
Jeremy was far from the untouchable figure he seemed on the surface. He was possessive, and even a little reckless.
Just thinking about the whispered words in her ear made Melody's heart race and her face burn.
She softly answered, "I don't want anything." She had never expected anything from being with him.
Jeremy's brows furrowed slightly. He seemed to be deep in thought, but no one could tell what he was thinking.
He silently stared at Melody for a long moment before speaking, "If you ever want something, tell me. I'll make it up to you."
Melody was caught off guard. "Make it up to me?" She tried to get up but had no strength.
She was dressed in a loose cotton-linen nightdress, and her movement caused the fabric to slip off her shoulder slightly, which exposed the faint, lingering marks on her body.
Jeremy had long and well-defined fingers, and they looked stunning even when he held a scalpel. But Melody hadn't expected that when those same hands touched her, they would be so composed and unhurried.
Flustered, she pulled her dress back up and used the couch to steady herself.
She looked at Jeremy, her bright eyes filled with nervousness as she clenched her hands into fists. "I just have one question for you."
"What is it?"
"What… are we?" Her voice grew softer with each word, but she still couldn't stop herself from looking at him in anticipation.
It wasn't something she would have dared to ask before. But now, she felt like she had to.
Their engagement had been arranged just as he had said. They never brought it up as it had all been decided by their families.
But she had liked him for so long, so she couldn't help but have expectations.
With that, he turned and walked back into the study, leaving Melody stunned in the living room.
By the time she'd processed what had happened, the study door had already closed, and the living room dimmed once more.
But Melody's heartbeat was louder than ever, as if it would burst out of her chest.
Her lips curled into a smile, and her eyes shimmered like starlight.
She looked toward the study, unable to contain her happiness.
…
At 11:00 pm, she had a night shift at the hospital.
She hesitated over whether to tell Jeremy.
Just then, the study door opened.
