A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 72

Denvin sounded nonchalant, but it still drew everyone's gaze to Melody. She hadn't expected him to say something like this either. As nerves began to take hold of her, she instinctively avoided his gaze.

A tall, looming figure suddenly stood in front of her, obstructing Denvin's gaze. It was Jeremy, and his stance was sharp and composed.

Jeremy had no idea what prompted his actions, but the way Denvin looked at Melody rubbed him the wrong way. So, he instinctively stood in front of her.

She could smell Jeremy's refreshing odor. Her heart was in her throat a second ago, but it was no longer so. Although it sounded a little presumptuous to say it, it was the truth that he gave her most of her sense of security.

Laura followed Denvin's gaze and saw Melody as well. With furrowed eyebrows, she commented in a displeased tone, "We asked you to return for a family dinner. What's up with all that makeup?"

As a matter of fact, Alexis had merely applied casual and light makeup for Melody. Melody had rarely worn any makeup most of the time, which was why she particularly stood out, irritating Laura.

Laura didn't like it whenever Melody outshone Krystal. Andrew glanced at Melody with a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes as well.

All of a sudden, Melody felt more unsettled. She walked next to Jeremy and asked timidly, "Do I look strange tonight?"

He glanced at her, but his expression remained unchanged. She had delicate features, a fair complexion, and bright eyes.

Jeremy hadn't given beauty standards too much thought. To him, everyone had the same features with the only difference in their symmetry and delicateness.

With that said, he was aware that people in his department had been secretly comparing physical attractiveness. They had always agreed that Melody was the most beautiful nurse.

Not only did the brilliant light in the living room make her skin look more radiant, but it also gave her eyes a soft, dewy shine. What was more, she was giving him a helpless look, which gave him the desire to pick on her.

Jeremy lowered his gaze. Initially, he wanted to tell her that she looked okay. As he spoke, however, his words were twisted into something entirely different.

"Mm-hmm."

Melody's eyes immediately widened and she was rooted to her spot. His lips curled involuntarily, but he quickly composed himself.

The dining hall in the Wardolf residence was very spacious. Furthermore, the Wardolfs were hosting a welcome home dinner for Denvin. So, Laura instructed the maids to prepare so many dishes that they took up the whole dining table.

Needless to say, their dinner topic revolved around Denvin.

Jeremy knew Denvin well enough but wasn't exactly close. He was only here today because Andrew had invited him over. Meanwhile, Melody sat next to him, keeping her head lowered as she ate her dinner. It was better for her to avoid drawing attention at a time like this.

Melody pursed her lips. Back when she started interning, Denvin was still in the country. On her first day of internship, he came looking for her with his hands bleeding.

He was in a fight with someone and hurt his arm, and he needed a tetanus shot. What was more, he specifically asked for her to give him the injection.

She was afraid of Denvin, to begin with. Her fear was magnified when she saw his grim look and the coldness in his eyes as he stared at her. The blood on his arm didn't help to soothe her either.

Later, he filed a complaint to the head nurse about her mistake.

Melody responded meekly, "I'm doing quite well."

Her voice was so soft that it was barely audible. In fact, Jeremy might've been the only one who heard her. As he lowered his gaze, he noticed that her long, thick eyelids kept fluttering.

"That couldn't be farther from the truth. You made a big mess at your work." Laura placed some food on Krystal's plate as she spoke. "A while ago, she leaked the news about Tessa's hospitalization, which made the patient's condition much worse.

"Later, her ears started having problems, and she couldn't hear anything. If Jeremy hadn't given her a helping hand, she would've been fired long ago."
