Chapter 62: Worry 

Lucy’s voice was filled with helplessness and fear, like a stray puppy begging Michael for comfort. 

Chloe stood still, a mocking smile playing on her lips. 

As she expected, Michael replied right away, “I’m on my way. Don’t worry, Auntie will be fine.” 

He’s such a sweetheart! 

Michael hung up the phone, gave Chloe a hesitant glance, and then turned and walked away. 

Candy fumed, cursing under her breath. “I knew it, he’s pure evil. Chloe, what if we just beat him up?” 

Chloe was totally done. 

“Whatever.” 

After that incident, Chloe lost all interest in going out to relax. Instead, she found herself worried about Wendy. 

She exchanged a few words with Candy, then rushed to the hospital. 

On the way, Chloe learned that Wendy had taken her meds and was feeling much better.

She arrived at the hospital and stepped into the elevator. That’s when she noticed someone pacing back and forth in the hallway. 

He didn’t enter any patient room, which was super suspicious. 

He’s not in a hospital gown, so he’s not a patient. 

But when Chloe looked back at him, he was gone. She didn’t think much of it. 

Chloe spun around and walked into Wendy’s hospital room. 

It was still early, and Wendy wasn’t asleep yet. Seeing Chloe, a smile lit up her face. 

“Where’s Michael? Why didn’t he come with you?” 

Wendy asked the question again, making Chloe sigh in exasperation. 

Chloe perched on the edge of her bed. “He’s working. He can’t make it.” 

Wendy might be out of it sometimes, but when she’s clear–headed, she’s just like anyone else. 

“Hey Chloe, have you been arguing with Michael lately?” 

Chloe’s body tensed up instinctively. 

She awkwardly tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and

flashed a small smile. “Mom, stop overthinking. Michael and I are doing great. Our relationship is solid.” 

Their toxic relationship was oddly consistent. 

“Really? You’re not messing with me?” 

Wendy was still a bit skeptical. 

Chloe always came alone. Last time, even though Michael showed up later, Wendy still felt something was off. 

Chloe grabbed her hand, gently placing it over her cold one. 

“It’s true!” 

Wendy studied her for a moment, saw no cracks, and finally started to relax. 

“If there’s any tension between you and your spouse, make sure to talk it out right away. No secrets. And if Michael ever lies to you, don’t just brush it off.” 

Wendy didn’t get many moments of clarity, so she seized the chance to talk to Chloe as much as she could. 

Chloe knew exactly why she said that. 

Wendy and Jacob’s story began with a lie. 

Even after Jacob’s death, she was still being deceived.

“Chloe, if Michael ever tricks you, let me know. I’ll set him straight!” 

Wendy didn’t want Chloe to get tricked like she did.
