Austyn walked to the smolding area.
Both men lit up and inhaled.
Waitresses passing by stole glances at the two handsome looking gentlemen.
‘Damian asked you to bring her here?‘ Austyn asked after a long drag.
since the cat was already out of the bag, Luca opted to tell the whole truth. ‘Yes. I picked them up half an hour ago.‘ “Them?
‘Kira was shopping with her friend, so I had to get both of them.‘
Then he asked, ‘You didn’t know?”
Austyn spared him a brief glance. ‘Jesse let slip on the phone. Said you guys were all coming here to the range. But I don’t recall anyone extending that invitation to me. So I knew something fishy was going on.”
Luca slapped a palm to his forehead.
So it was Jesse the big mouth who gave the game away.
‘Why does Damian want to see her?”
‘I don’t know. Honest. He just asked me to bring her here.‘ Luca looked around. ‘He was here a minute ago. Where did he disappear off to?”
Austyn blew out a smoke ring.
‘Aren’t you going over there?‘ Luca pointed to the tables.

Seeing the agitation in his friend’s eyes, Luca bit back another question.
‘You and Isabel,‘ Austyn said suddenly when Luca was about to leave. ‘It was a marriage of convenience in the beginning. I remember how much you wanted a divorce in the early days.”
He ground out the cigarette with his heel. ‘But you seem to have grown quite fond of her. What changed? Did you fall in love with her?
‘Is this a trick question?‘ Luca asked suspiciously.
Austyn shot him a look. ‘I don’t care about the messy affair you have with that woman behind Isabel’s back.‘
Luca seemed to relax. ‘It’s not like that. I try to do right by that woman because of guilt, not…Anyway, as for Isabel, I think fate brought us together. Sure, I didn’t love her when we got married, but eventually, I…It just took me a long while to figure out that I can’t live without her.”
‘So, you want to have your cake and eat it too?‘ Austyn asked. ‘Fooling around with a mistress before going home to a lawfully wedded wife, is that your plan?‘
Luca opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
He left without answering the question.
He knew where Austyn was coming from, but Austyn didn’t have the full picture.
How’d Your Know Gideon?
Austyn didn’t speak.
“I’m not trying to get her in trouble, Giana said. “To the contrary, I’m trying to help her solve her marital problems.” “Oh? Austyn raised an eyebrow.
“We spent last night and the better part of today together. She hasn’t stopped talking about you the whole time, Mr McCarthy.”
“What did she say?” Austyn sat up straight.
*Do you want the truth or something beautiful?”
Austyn scowled. ‘I don’t have time for lies or half–truths, nor for people who beat around the bush, Miss Mills, if you have something to say, say it.”

Giana put down the glass of orange juice and turned to face Austyn. ‘Kira said that you are petty, that you the tantrums like a woman and that you haven’t been home for several days.‘
She had more to add but stopped when she saw the murderous look on Austyn’s face.
Giana held back, not wanting to be the messenger that got shot.
She gave Austyn enough time to digest the news, then she continued, “Do you know why Kira took Kayleigh’s cheque?‘
‘Go on.”
“Kira doesn’t like trouble. She prefers a quiet life. And Kayleigh was ruining that. She kept pestering Kira to leave you and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Kira had to come up with a solution.”
Giana paused.
Austyn drummed a finger on the table and said impatiently, ‘Go on.”
Satisfied with his response, Giana said, ‘So Kira took the cheque from Kayleigh for two reasons. One, to get the actress to back off, at least temporarily. Two, to present the evidence to you, so you’ll do something to rein in your mistress.‘
Austyn gazed into the distance. ‘She could have come to me directly.”
“Would you believe her if she did?‘ Giana asked. ‘Without evidence, would you believe that Kayleigh was harassing her? I doubt it.”
Giana sighed. ‘You seen to be really fond of that mistress of yours. Kira wasn’t sure you would believe her side of the story. Even if you do, Kayleigh will get a slap on the wrist, at most. Or, you may turn a blind eye and sweep the whole thing under the rug. Which will only spur her on. Who knows what other evil plans she has in store for Kira.”
Austyn pursed his lips.
That night in the study, when Kira gave him the cheque, why didn’t she say anything?
Did she not believe that he would take her side?
